Job Description The Utah Department of Corrections (UDC) is looking for exceptionally driven people to join an awesome laundry team that serves a large prison. Our laundry specialists are uniquely qualified to deliver services to UDC employees and criminal offenders. UDC employees and criminal offenders rely on our laundry team to help maintain a safe, secure, clean, sanitary and healthy prison operation. If hired, you'd be working at a state of the art laundry operation at the newly constructed prison in Salt Lake City. Career advancement within the laundry organization is possible. This job is NOT public safety certified and does not require peace officer status or certification. Principal Duties
  • Under the direction of a Mail, Property & Laundry Manager (Program Manager), the Laundry Specialist assists the laundry supervisor to ensure effective operations of a UDC central prison laundry operation. This includes operating a box truck or electric cart/tow vehicle to pick up laundry from inmate housing areas. You would also be inspecting, sorting, storing, staging and delivering laundry items. It's possible you may operate laundry equipment if inmate laundry workers are unavailable. These activities occur at the laundry building inside the secure prison facility.
  • Following OSHA workplace safety regulations, laws, requirements and practices are mandatory. Adherence to all established correctional mail and property service standards, policies and procedures is required.
  • Strict adherence to prison safety and security guidelines, policies and practices while working in and around a correctional institution environment is required.
The Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate for this position has the following:
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Clean driving history/record.
  • Laundry related experience and training are preferred but not required.
  • Previous part-time time work experience at any employer is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of common computer/office equipment and software is preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are preferred.

  • Collaborates with laundry managers/personnel, UDC staff, criminal offenders, offender family members/friends and other areas/agencies to ensure proper handling of laundry by operating a box truck or electric cart/tow vehicle to pick up laundry from inmate housing areas. You would also be inspecting, sorting, storing, staging and delivering laundry items. It's possible you may operate laundry equipment if inmate laundry workers are unavailable.
  • Operates pallet jacks, Non-CDL vehicles, dollies and other equipment for laundry activities.
  • Identifies problems or potential problem areas and collaborates with managers to find solutions.
  • Performs cleaning, sanitation and preventative maintenance on all laundry equipment.
  • Maintains accurate records and logs.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Supplemental Information
  • This job is NOT public safety certified and does not require peace officer status or certification.
  • This position is normally intended to work weekday and daytime shifts (8 or 10 hours per day). However, all correctional facilities operate 365 days per year and the work schedule may on an infrequent basis possibly include weekends and holidays. This is a full-time position working 40 hours per week; overtime is possible.
  • Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around and operating vehicles, laundry equipment and climbing ladders. It is possible to come in contact with hazardous chemicals, dangerous biological materials, drugs etc.
  • Although correctional officers will be present to provide safety and security, there are some risks found in potentially dangerous correctional environments. You will receive training and tools to help mitigate these risks.
  • The work requires moderate physical exertion such as sitting or standing for long periods of time, regularly operating laundry equipment/vehicles, frequent walking, repeated lifting/pushing/pulling of heavy objects up to 50 pounds, and climbing, crouching, or crawling is also possible.
