This position is based in General Service's Landscape Management Division. This Equipment Operator II position, in the Landscape Operations Section, is responsible for providing technical and administrative support in all aspects of Tree Maintenance and Landscape Maintenance operations: including Landscape Maintenance and Installation but primarily Tree Maintenance.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform daily, seasonal, and annual tasks to support Landscape Operations including but not limited to; landscape maintenance/installation, tree maintenance, pesticide application, skilled equipment operation, administrative duties, and moderate to heavy manual labor.
  • Properly and safely operate equipment such as: pesticide sprayers, utility work machines, skid steers, mowers, chippers, trucks, trailers, and landscape tools used in tree and landscape maintenance/installation.
  • Work on a team and work independently to meet or exceed City goals and expectations; directing subordinate staff in assigned work.
  • Assist in the on-going development and implementation of the Tree Maintenance Plan for City owned properties.
  • Assist in ROW mowing and other landscape maintenance.
  • Assist in various landscape renovations and installation projects.
  • Read and understand safety data sheets, blueprints, maps, and equipment repair manuals.
  • Provide basic equipment maintenance including but not limited to: sharpening chainsaws, changing mower blades, and greasing equipment, etc.
  • Provide traffic control when needed in accordance with the NC DOT Guidelines and WATCH Handbook.
  • Work with citizens to resolve complaints in the field.
  • Working in adverse weather conditions may be required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of Landscape and Arboriculture equipment and their safe and proper uses.
  • Basic knowledge of Arboricultural/Horticultural practices and plants indigenous to the southeastern U.S.
  • Basic knowledge of pesticides and their safe and proper use, application, and storage
  • Basic knowledge of tree maintenance operations.
  • Basic knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labor for extended periods of time
  • Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with coworkers and the public

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school graduate or GED
  • At least 1 year of experience in the arboriculture and/or horticulture field
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a good driving record or other States equivalent and ability to obtain at least a Class B CDL within 6 months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ISA Certification
  • NC Pesticide License
  • NC Driver's License Class A or B CDL or other States equivalent
