Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have previous experience in a similar position.

As a Laborer you will work under the close supervision of a Leadworker and the division Supervisor, performing a variety of routine, heavy labor and manual tasks. Tasks often require considerable physical strength and stamina and may be performed in inclement and/or potentially hazardous conditions. You will learn to perform the more skilled tasks of the assigned division and operate motorized equipment in a training capacity.

Essential Functions (may include but are not limited to the following)

* Assist in laying pipe with sewer and/or water lines

* Sweep and clean roadsides, gutters, curbs, culverts, catch basins and other drainage structures

* Remove debris and undergrowth

* Assist in setting forms and mixing and pouring concrete

* Assist in raking, smoothing and tamping repaired asphalt patches

* Assist in the layout of traffic patterns on streets and in the operation of painting equipment

* Assist in unblocking sewers through rodding and jetting

* Assist in making taps and connections to mains

* Work in confined spaces; climb ladders and work independently

* Assist water service worker

* Serve as flag person when working in traffic

* Assist in the maintenance of mechanical equipment including cleaning mechanical equipment and maintain basic tools used on the job

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of: Use and purpose of designated hand tools employed in basic laboring work; safety precautions and practices; basic arithmetic and sufficient English to follow instructions and learn to write work reports.

Ability to: Learn safety practices necessary in working on public thoroughfares; learn geography of the City; learn to perform semi-skilled and skilled duties in the assigned division; comprehend and follow oral and written instructions and safety warnings and information.

Skills: Ability to safely and efficiently use hand tools, air tools, hydraulic tools, jackhammers, and power and automotive technical equipment in a training capacity.

License

Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license issued by the DMV, with an acceptable driving record

Education & Experience

Education which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance typically illustrated by a High School Diploma or GED.

A minimum of one year of responsible maintenance, construction or similar work is highly desirable.

Physical, Mental and Environmental Working Conditions

Ability to perform heavy manual labor including lifting and carrying heavy objects for short distances weighing up to 90 pounds, perform pulling, pushing, twisting and bending needed for assisting in building/facility operation and maintenance, and water/wastewater delivery system operation and maintenance; work outdoors in adverse weather; perform pick and shovel work in digging, widening and backfilling; assist in the cleaning of sewers which includes working in raw sewage.

Ability to stand and walk for considerable periods of time; twist the upper body; perform moderate amounts of crouching, stooping and squatting. Ability to climb ladders and to climb into confined spaces; to work weekends and evenings as necessary, and to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Sufficient vision, hearing and stamina to perform the above job duties, and use of proper safety and hearing equipment when using noisy and dangerous equipment.

Benefits

Healthy Workplaces/Healthy Families Act: California Paid Sick Leave Benefit, as amended effective 1/1/2024. This benefit accrues at the rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked and is available after 90 days of employment. The maximum use of paid sick leave is 40 hours in a one-year period. There is no cash value associated with benefit.

Vacation Pay. This benefit is for part-time casual employees who work 30 or more days within a year from the beginning of employment with the City of Burlingame, and accrues at the rate of one hour for every 52 hours worked to a maximum benefit of 16 hours per year. No employee shall be allowed to have an accumulation of more than two years' worth of vacation accrual to their credit at any one time.

No other benefits are offered. This position is at will and is not part of the City's Civil Service System. There is no guarantee of hours and employment may end at any time.

Candidates must have an acceptable driving record defined as follows:

In the last FIVE years:

No more than 3 moving violations

No outstanding warrants for failure to appear

In the last SEVEN years:

No convictions for reckless driving

No convictions for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs

Applicants with six or more points over the previous three years on his/her driving record will be considered to have an unacceptable driving record and will be disqualified from this recruitment process.
