Overview
Responsible for the onboarding, training, and competency assessment of staff within laboratory departments including Histocompatibility, Flow Cytometry, Infectious Disease, and DCU Limited-Service Laboratory. Additionally, works with laboratory leadership to assess and implement ongoing departmental educational needs.
Responsibilities
- Engages in job shadowing with staff to ensure the continuity of policies and best practices.
- Serve as the CLIA Director's designee to perform and document training and competency assessments of laboratory testing personnel in accordance with CLIA Required Elements:
- Direct observation of routine test performance, including specimen handling.
- Monitoring of test result recording and reporting.
- Review of test results, worksheets, QC, PT, and maintenance records.
- Direct observation of instrument maintenance and function checks.
- Assessment using previously tested specimens or PT samples.
- Evaluation of problem-solving skills.
- Work with laboratory staff, including Laboratory Managers and Technical Specialists, to establish training rotations and competency assessments during the staff member's regular schedule as possible.
- Maintain competency and follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results within all departments, including:
- ABO Blood Group Testing and A Titer testing
- HLA Molecular Typing: all methods
- Flow Cytometry: T & B Cell Flow Crossmatch
- Infectious Disease Donor Screening and Confirmatory Testing (antibody and NAT)
- HLA Antibody Detection and Identification
- DCU Limited-Service Laboratory
Act as a coach, providing constructive feedback and fostering development of others.
Promote a learning-friendly environment with clear explanations of clinical laboratory testing activities.
Assist Technical Specialists and Laboratory Managers in scheduling and documenting training and competency assessments for assays/methods not listed in the Laboratory Technologist I job description as needed.
Coach team members with evidence-based critical thinking and decision support using advanced clinical knowledge of laboratory processes.
Participate in performance improvement initiatives, identify trends, and support formal staff education needs; assist with data collection, analysis, and sharing best practices for staff meetings.
Collaborate with Laboratory leadership to ensure department personnel meet qualifications for CLIA, CAP, FDA and ASHI where applicable.
Demonstrate mastery of proper laboratory techniques and attention to detail.
Maintain competency to support on-call training of staff.
Adhere to quality control policies and document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
Serve as a role model for MTN B-REAL behavioral competencies and align actions with the organization's core values.
Administrative and Education Coordination
- Resolve clinical problems within established procedures with sound judgment for escalation when necessary.
- Create an environment that promotes learning.
- Provide summary reports of departmental activities and documentation of all testing personnel.
- Present educational materials at monthly staff meetings as requested.
- Lead laboratory orientation, training, and ongoing education with laboratory leadership.
- Verify that laboratory staff meet continuing education requirements each year.
- Coordinate Proficiency Testing with Laboratory Quality Compliance Specialist, Laboratory Managers, and Technical Specialists as needed for competency assessments.
Education and Qualifications
- Have earned a doctoral, master's, or bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution.
- Meets the personnel requirements for CLIA General Supervisor of High Complexity Testing.
- Minimum five years of experience in HLA typing, HLA antibody testing, flow cytometry, infectious disease and/or molecular diagnostics.
- A Certified Histocompatibility Technologist (CHT) or Certified Histocompatibility Specialist (CHS) ACHI certification strongly preferred.
- Formal training or experience as a Medical Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist preferred.
- Ability to work a minimum of 40 hours per week; may require varied hours/shifts to accommodate trainees.
- Successful completion of MTN PACE and TEMPO training or ability to complete within 2 years of starting the role.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills; ability to convey information clearly in person and by phone; professional documentation of relevant information.
- Excellent organization and time management; ability to work independently and collaboratively; strong problem-solving and stress management skills.
- Must maintain a valid driver's license and have reliable transportation for company reimbursement under IRS guidelines.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and transfer short distances; ability to operate computers and lab equipment.
- OSHA Category I – regularly exposed to bloodborne pathogens; bloodborne pathogens protection is required.
- Home internet and wireless phone access may be required.
