Laboratory Animal Technician
The Laboratory Animal Technician will provide care for laboratory animals, their environment, and maintain records of their productivity and growth.
Key Accountabilities
- Care for animals including feeding, watering, cleaning, grooming, breeding, and weaning responsibilities alongside routine welfare and environmental checks.
- Cleaning, sanitizing, maintaining animal cages, pens, rooms, associated areas and equipment.
- Provide enrichment and socialize (certain species) animals.
- Provide injections, medication, health samples of animals under veterinary direction.
- Following strict biosecurity policy and disease prevention processes.
- Collecting and recording data accurately and in line with policies and processes and update inventory management databases.
- Performing physical examination and health checks including sexing and weighing animals.
- Report any welfare concerns promptly.
- Receiving animals, selecting, and packing products for delivery; Coordinate order details to include selection, packaging and confirming accuracy.
- Understanding and compliance of legislation and procedures including Animal Welfare Act guide, Quality, SOPs, EHS and ISO.
- Completion of mandatory training to ensure capability of all aspects of the role.
- Time mating animals (if applicable to species).
- Application of identification (ex. microchipping, tattoo, ear notch, leg rings).
- Perform artificial insemination, blood collection, and other health sampling as directed.
- Conduct hatch activities including extensive documentation (if applicable to species).
- Maintain records of animals' history, developing radiographs, administering medications to animals, monitoring an animal's weight and size and preparing tissue samples.
- Preparation and processing of samples, anticoagulants, and blood products.
- Biological tissue collection; tissue biopsy for genotyping (GEMs).
- Providing weekend/holiday cover as requested/directed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- Desire to work with, care and handle poultry on a daily basis.
- Attention to detail
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; must be able to read and interpret materials
- Attention to details, experience with GDP desired
- Must be available to work weekends/ holidays on a rotating basis
- Willingness to work overtime when needed
- Cannot have contact with avian species outside of work
- Positive immunity to MMR and Varicella
- Able to work in a confined environment
- Able to follow sterile entry procedures and maintain neat, clean and safe conditions.
- Capable of wearing required PPE
Preferences
- Experience with handling animals, specifically of the avian species
- ALAT or relative certification
