Salary Range: $58,000 - $67,000

The College of Integrative Sciences and Arts (CISA) is seeking a full-time Laboratory Manager at the downtown Phoenix campus to join our team. In this role, you will report to the Science, Mathematics, and Social Science Faculty Head in the School of Applied Sciences and Arts and will work collaboratively with a community of teachers, peers, and instructional assistants to engage students in developing understanding of scientific knowledge and processes.

Under administrative and faculty direction, you will manage the operational and instructional activities in a large laboratory teaching program involving several disciplines. You will be responsible for ensuring that all laboratories have an assigned qualified and trained instructor, that students are enrolled in the proper laboratory, and that the laboratories operate according to department and national guidelines with respect to safety and pedagogy. In addition, this role is responsible for developing and recommending new experiments/demonstrations, and instructing and supervising Teaching Assistants, Instructional Aides, and staff in procedures, policies, and teaching techniques.

Essential Duties:

  • Manage day-to-day operation of nine undergraduate science teaching laboratories and the laboratory preparation facilities.
  • Supervise, review, schedule and train large numbers of student workers and full-time contract employees, (i.e., instructional specialists), in laboratory teaching needs, safe laboratory practices, and maintaining inventory records.
  • Collaborate with faculty to oversee development and implementation of experiment schedules and demonstrations for semester's courses.
  • Assist Faculty Head in scheduling classes that make most efficient use of teaching laboratories.
  • Assist Faculty Head in planning and monitoring an annual budget for laboratory operation for the academic year and summer school program.
  • Participate in promoting the university's commitment to values expressed by the ASU Charter.
  • Develop policies and procedures to assure adherence to university safety and procurement procedures.
  • Collaborate with supervisor, faculty, and EHS to maintain safe laboratory operations in accordance with university and OSHA policies.
  • Procure chemicals, biologicals, supplies, and equipment as needed.
  • Recommend new equipment for the laboratories.
  • Compile statistics such as chemical/supply usage.
  • Monitor projects with regard to progress and cost.
  • Support the planning and coordination of new and/or remodeled facilities by providing input on design and functional requirements.
  • Supervise preparation lab staff to ensure proper set up of laboratory experiments, including equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain inventories; requisition and restock supplies for the teaching laboratories.
  • Hire, supervise and train prep lab student workers. Answer questions concerning experiments and provide training on equipment usage and proper techniques.
  • Attend meetings with faculty, science staff, and/or laboratory instructors to discuss changes and modifications in laboratory experiments.
  • Supervise the monitoring of equipment for proper functioning; perform minor repairs and calibrations on equipment and contact appropriate vendors to perform major repairs.
  • Supervise the maintenance of specimens in labs for teaching purposes.
  • Manage biological and chemical waste.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in biology or chemistry (or related field).
  • Three years' research experience in a biology or chemistry lab or related field.
  • Three years' mentoring or teaching experience.
  • Three years' supervisory experience.
  • Exceptional organization skills as related to physical and digital inventories.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and concepts of the various methods and techniques of science laboratory instruction, including the use of technology and laboratory equipment.
  • Knowledge of the university's policies and procedures related to staff and student hiring.
  • Knowledge of the university's policies and procedures related to Environmental Health and Safety as well as chemical/biological waste handling.
  • Knowledge of the University purchasing system in order to identify the proper equipment needed for the laboratories that will meet the needs of the classroom students and/or teacher/faculty.
  • Demonstrated commitment to values expressed by the ASU Charter.
  • Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships within organizational area.

Working Environment:

  • Many activities are performed in an environmentally controlled lab/office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and travel moderate distances to perform work.
  • May be required to wear personal protective equipment before entering laboratories including but not limited to lab coat, gloves, safety goggles, and close-toed shoes.
  • May require early morning or evening hours depending on lab schedule.
  • Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions. Regular use of standard office equipment including but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, and associated computer/technology peripherals.
  • A valid driver's license is required for this position.
