Department Summary The School of Art + Design is one of 3 schools in the College of Design at the University of Oregon and is comprised of the Department of Art and the Department of Product Design. The School of Art + Design is a community of creatively and critically engaged artists and designers whose work mines the intersection of thinking, making, seeing, and questioning. We provide instruction in the areas of product design and fine arts including ceramics, digital arts, fibers, metalsmithing and jewelry, painting and drawing, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. The School of Art + Design is the academic home for 31 tenure track faculty members, as well as many non-tenure-track faculty and pro tempore instructors, and serves approximately 650 undergraduate majors, many non-majors, and 60 graduate students. The School of Art + Designs NASAD-accredited programs offer undergraduate degrees in Art, Art & Technology, and Product Design. Bachelors degrees (BA or BS) encourage liberal arts breadth and interdisciplinary connections, while the Bachelor of fine arts (BFA) degree is a studio-intensive program allowing concentrated study. At the graduate level, we offer the interdisciplinary MFA in Art, as well as the Portland-based masters in Sports Product Design. Position Summary The Art Department is accepting applications for a one-year fixed-term visiting position in Jewelry & Metalsmithing. This position begins September 16, 2025 and ends June 15, 2026. This is a non-tenure- track Visiting Assistant Professor position with a salary commensurate with experience. The candidate will assume teaching responsibilities at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The position includes the teaching of six to eight courses (in a 3 term quarter system) and sharing the responsibilities in teaching BFA and graduate students. Courses to be taught include lower-division and upper-division jewelry & metalsmithing courses, and independent studies with BFA and MFA students. The position will also include shared responsibilities for oversight in the program and departmental service. Visiting faculty members are in residence and are expected to participate in the full range of faculty activities. Minimum Requirements Visiting faculty positions are intended for those who hold a similar or relevant appointment at another institution or who have recently obtained a terminal degree and are seeking further professional experience prior to seeking a professorship.
- MFA or terminal degree in related field
- Excellence in creative practice.
Professional Competencies
- Strong understanding of jewelry & metalsmithing practices within the expanded field.
- Ability to work cooperatively with diverse faculty and student populations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior college or university-level teaching experience.
- Experience with technical training in metalsmithing & jewelry.
