Interim Controller (Nonprofit Client)Location: Montgomery County, MD (close to Washington, DC)Schedule: Hybrid (2 to3 days per week on-site)

Our client, a mission-driven nonprofit organization, is seeking an experienced Interim Controller to lead daily accounting operations and ensure accurate, compliant financial reporting. This is a hands-on leadership role working closely with the CFO and operational teams to support a complex organization with diverse programs and funding sources.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations including general ledger, A/P, A/R, payroll, grants, and cash management

  • Ensure timely and accurate month-end close and internal financial reporting

  • Maintain internal controls, accounting policies, and ensure GAAP compliance

  • Support development of annual budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections

  • Manage preparation for annual audit, 990, 5500, and compliance reporting

  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, promoting accountability and development

  • Collaborate with department leaders on financial performance and grant reporting

  • Monitor investment activity and steward restricted and grant funds

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA strongly preferred)

  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years in a leadership role

  • Nonprofit accounting experience (501(c)(3)) with $10M+ annual revenue

  • Strong experience with government grant compliance and multi-program operations

  • Experience with Intacct (Sage Intacct) and Ramp expense management software highly preferred

  • Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills
