We support our students in their journey to college by offering academic enrichment and guidance from middle school through college graduation. This includes a rigorous summer program that begins while they are still in middle school. Our distinctive students teaching students model trains college students (Teaching Fellows or TFs) to serve as Teaching Fellows during our summer program, exposing them to the triumphs and challenges of being an educator.Instructional Coach DescriptionTo ensure our Teaching Fellows' successful instruction and management, Breakthrough hires an Instructional Coach (IC) in each academic discipline (Literature, Math, Science, and Social Studies) to oversee a 5-10 TFs department. Instructional Coaches are experienced and successful professional teachers who provide support, training, and feedback to Teaching Fellows throughout the eight-week summer program and engage fully in the Breakthrough New York community. Exemplary Instructional Coaches are experts in their specific content areas, able to guide TFs through effective planning and execution, and always hold both TFs and students to the highest expectations. This role was designed to support classroom teachers interested in developing skills as instructional leaders. Responsibilities are commensurate with that of a school-year administrator, and this experience will benefit high-performing teachers looking to expand their skill set further. Past participants have become Academic Deans and Instructional Coaches in full-time school settings. Schedule & Role ResponsibilitiesSummary of ResponsibilitiesBefore Summer
  • Internalize existing curriculum.
  • Connect with Teaching Fellows before summer program.
  • Build and present pre-summer presentations and workshops for TFs
  • Review TF's first week of materials and provide feedback.
  • Prepare TFs for mock teaching series.
  • Attend and participate in Instructional Coach training.
During Summer
  • Oversee all instructional aspects of TF work within your department.
  • Observe each TF teach 2-3 times a week and provide feedback on culture and instruction.
  • Vet all TF lesson plans and materials and assessments weekly (5 per week).
  • Assist BTNY staff in various administrative roles, including supervising breakfast and lunch, supervising field trips and onsite events, and substituting when a teaching fellow is out.
  • Provide academic or behavioral interventions for students as needed.
  • Participate in weekly meetings with other ICs, your Program Manager (PM), the Senior Director of Middle School (SDMS) and formally with your TFs at least once per week.
Additional ResponsibilitiesEach Instructional Coach may be assigned additional managerial responsibilities that help our program run smoothly and develop new teachers (accounted for in the hours/work schedule below.) Assignments for these roles will be shared shortly before IC Training, based on hired ICs' preferences and Program needs.Schedule of Instructional Coach Duties
  • Thursday, April 25th: Instructional Coach Training Part 1 (Virtual, 5:00 PM-8:00 PM)
  • April 29th-May 17th: Review subject curriculum and complete curriculum pre work (~5 hours, Remote)
  • Saturday, May 18th: Instructional Coach Training Part 2 (BTNY Office, 9:30 AM-5:00 PM)
  • Mid May - Early June: Teaching Fellow Training Prep
    • Reach out to Teaching Fellow Team
    • Support BTNY staff in reviewing TF pre-summer work and provide feedback
    • Prepare individual presentations and workshops for teaching fellow team
  • June 17 - June 27th: Teaching Fellow Training
    • Lead 4 Department Meetings with Teaching Fellows
    • Train Teaching Fellows in subject-specific competencies.
      • Two 1.5-hour sessions per week, 4:30-6 PM (total of 6 hours over 2 weeks)
    • Vet TF's Week 1 and 2 materials and lesson plans.
    • Support at Back to Breakthrough Night
  • [HOLD]: July 1st - 3rd for additional Teaching Fellow Training if needed
  • July 8 - August 9: Five-Week Summer Program (~36 hours per week, On-Site, see schedule details below)
    • Provide Teaching Fellows with support and daily professional development through at least two informal observations and growth conferences per week.
    • Ensure accurate tracking of student achievement data to inform instruction and plan and implement interventions.
    • Meet weekly with PM/SDMS to discuss Teaching Fellows' progress and to further develop coaching skills.
    • Oversee implementation of daily elective classes.
    • Act as a grade team lead.
    • Teach High School Options (7th and 8th grade) or High School Transitions (9th grade), in class, twice a week. Lesson plans would be provided.
  • August 12 - 15: Evaluation Week (~12 hours, On-Site or Remote)
    • Submit a final evaluation for each of your assigned fellows and the overall summer program.
    • Supervise Fellows as they assess their student's academic performance, including reviewing all TF final evaluation comments and providing feedback on language, ensuring all TF grades are submitted and accurate.
    • Ensure teaching fellows' materials are properly saved in the correct Drive and TFs complete end-of-summer commitments.
Summer Program Daily ScheduleThe summer daily schedule for TFs is 7:30 am - 5:30 pm. Work as an Instructional Coach during the five-week summer program includes two shifts. ICs work Mondays - Fridays from 8 am-2 pm or 11-5 pm. All ICs are asked to work for the celebration from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, August 9th.Qualifications and RequirementsQualificationsExperience
  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred
  • At least 3-4 years of professional classroom experience teaching in a middle school or high school
  • Outstanding track record with proven student achievement, preferably in an NYC school
  • Prior experience with Breakthrough is highly desirable
Skills
  • A strong understanding of curriculum implementation and instruction
  • Experience coaching or working with teachers in building strong lesson planning and/or instructional skills
  • Comfort and confidence in working with middle school and college-aged students
  • Ability to multitask between projects and manage own time to meet goals
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, especially in areas of cultural competency, and an ability to deliver positive, constructive, and honest feedback, both written and verbal

  • New BTNY Instructional Coaches will be paid at a rate of $27/hour, in bi-weekly installments from early May through mid-August.
  • Returning BTNY Instructional Coaches will be paid at a rate of $28/hour, in bi-weekly installments from early May through mid-August.
