NOTTOWAY COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS POSITION DESCRIPTIONPosition Title: Instructional Assistant - Special Education Terms of Employment: 10 months / 190 days Supervisor: Principal FSLA Status: Non-ExemptGeneral Description Provides classroom support to teachers in special education classes. Performs routine clerical and instructional assignments within established procedures and standard practices so as not to infringe upon the responsibilities reserved for licensed teachers. Contacts are made within and outside the department; may require handling of sensitive information or dealing tactfully with others. Some judgment is required. Each position will have a specific set of work assignments particular to meeting the needs of students or departments being served.Preferred Minimum Qualifications Candidates for employment must be a minimum of 18 years of age and hold a high school diploma or GED. Education, training or experience sufficient to demonstrate the required knowledge, skills and abilities.Essential Job Functions
- Provides clerical assistance - typing, filing, maintaining records and ordering supplies and classroom materials.
- Assists teachers with classroom duties, including correcting work, recording grades, planning work, administering tests, gathering resource and supplementary materials, and setting up and operating technology/media equipment.
- Assists students with academic subjects - may assist students one-on-one, small groups, or whole class depending on assignment and individual qualifications; documents progress.
- Assists during fire drills, field trips, and special events.
- Assists students onto and off the school bus; supervises students at lunch, recess and in the absence of the teachers.
- Serves as an aide on the school bus/school car as needed.
- Works with students to implement behavior management programs, improve fine motor skills, visual perception, social, vocational and community skills.
- Provides prescribed health care for the health impaired student who requires the presence of a person trained to meet those health needs. May serve in absence of the clinic assistant.
- Assists with physical therapeutic training, including range of motion skills, fine motor skills, visual perception and social skills.
- Assists with toileting students, changing diapers and general hygiene; may be required to handle seizures and other physical complications; handles various complicated positioning equipment; evaluates pain and discomfort levels; evaluates responses to stimuli.
- Escorts students when necessary; provides physical support/intervention to students when necessary under the direction and supervision of the teacher.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Equipment Operation Uses a personal computer and/or laptop, standard office equipment, and other equipment related to the assigned area.Contacts Contacts are made within and outside the school division and require the handling of sensitive and/or confidential information related to students served.Decision Making Performs work under the direction of the teacher(s) and administrator(s). The noise level in the work environment is moderate to quiet.Evaluation Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation personnel.Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Demonstrated basic reading, writing and computation skills. Previous experience working with groups of children. Some knowledge of general academic subjects sufficient to teach others, of childhood growth and development, behavior management techniques, and clerical procedures. Demonstrated ability to supervise children in the absence of a supervisor, to perform basic clerical tasks, to communicate effectively orally and in writing, and to follow oral and written instructions. Demonstrated ability to work well with students, staff and parents in a professional manner. Requirements This position requires current First Aid/CPR /AED certification. The employee must attend provided training, as well as any required additional training(s), and renew as mandated.
