Construction Technicians perform materials testing on concrete, asphalt, soils, and other materials as required. They verify the contractors' work is completed in accordance with the project plans and specifications. Construction Technicians routinely read and interpret plans, contracts, and specifications, and they also record and maintain accurate documentation of quantities installed by the contractor as well as a diary of the construction activities as they occur throughout the day.All official records are maintained digitally, and technicians will be expected to utilize computers and various programs daily. Construction Technicians perform various survey tasks utilizing rods, levels, tape measures, and GPS equipment. Individuals will be expected to be able to work both as part of a team as well as independently with minimal supervision. This position assists with snow removal on highways and may be required to operate snowplows during winter weather events. Perform other duties as assigned.Requirements / QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:Highway Construction Technician II: Experience in performing activities pertinent to construction work such as surveying, materials testing, or field inspections. OR Coursework or training in construction surveying, materials testing, or inspections practices, and in using associated instruments and equipment. Also, applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license.Highway Construction Technician I: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license.Preferred Qualifications: Experience in surveying, road construction, materials testing, record keeping, trigonometry, and geometry. Experience in the operation of heavy equipment or snow removal equipment. Computer experience including word processing, spreadsheets, SiteManager, GEOPAK and MicroStation software. Training in survey or construction is desirable.Other: Must possess or be able to obtain a Class A or B CDL with tanker endorsement within 90 days of hire through our in-house CDL training program. Costs to obtain the permit will be paid for by the department. This position may require overnight travel. Regular and reliable attendance is required. In order to be hired at the Highway Construction Technician II level, applicants must have passed the NDOT Math, Highway Plan Reading, and Bridge Plan reading courses or have an Associate's degree in civil engineering technology or a related field which may be substituted for the completion of the NDOT courses. Upon hire, you will be provided with the required training material. This is a self-paced training and once completed provides for promotion to the Highway Construction Tech II level. Typically, this is accomplished within the first 6 months of employment.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Must have strong organizational skills, math skills, and computer skills. Must be able to understand and follow instruction as well as communicate effectively with the supervisor, coworkers, and the public. Must be able to obtain material testing certification such as ACI. Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds, climb, bend, stoop, walk long distances and work long hours, possibly weekends, in outdoor temperature extremes. Must be able to report to work within 45 minutes of notification under normal conditions.Ability to communicate both orally and in writing: read and interpret plans and specifications; perform mathematical calculations. Skill in surveying, materials testing, construction inspection, and/or operating equipment, computers and associated software. Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds, climb, bend, stoop, walk long distances and work long hours in outdoor temperature extremes. Must be able to report to work outside scheduled work hours for snow and other highway emergencies within 30 minutes under normal driving conditions.Ability to work and communicate with a team. Ability to work with minimal supervision, be self-motivated, and hold high integrity. Trainable. Ability and willingness to learn and accept challenges by learning and adjusting to new technology and processes. Quality/results-oriented sense of urgency in the performance of duties.
