Vermont Legal Aid is a non-profit 501(c)(3) law firm established in 1968. Vermont Legal Aid advocates on behalf of vulnerable Vermonters. Our goal is to address systemic and institutional problems that impact their lives. We provide civil (not criminal) legal services for Vermonters, including those living in poverty, with a disability, or over age 60. We also serve anyone who is discriminated against in housing decisions. We also help all who face challenges related to health care insurance or services, and people who need relief from abuse.

Role Description

Vermont Legal Aid is seeking a full-time HR Administrator in our Burlington office. The HR Administrator provides services to two related public interest law firms, Vermont Legal Aid and Legal Services Vermont. The HR Administrator handles and manages all aspects of payroll and benefits, maintains personnel records, oversees labor law compliance, and addresses performance issues.

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring that all VLA and LSV practices are administered appropriately, consistently, and in compliance with relevant laws;
  • Investigating employee complaints;
  • Processing bi-monthly payroll;
  • Administering benefits;
  • Consulting with benefits broker on the employee benefits plan;
  • Overseeing wage and data reporting;
  • Maintaining knowledge of human resource developments;
  • Collaborating with Accounting and HR assistants on HR-related tasks;
  • Participating in bargaining with our staff union.

Benefits

Benefits include starting salary of $75,000-87,000 (commensurate with experience), four weeks paid vacation, retirement, and excellent health benefits.

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of experience working in Human Resources at a level involving policy development and implementation.
  • Bachelors degree in Human Resources or related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • HR Certification (SHRM-CP, PHR, or higher) preferred.
  • Demonstrated analytical, problem solving, financial, and project management expertise.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel; familiarity with HRIS and other relevant software.
  • Experience with payroll, including non-standard payroll processing.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team. Flexible within a fast-paced and changing environment.
  • High level of initiative, ability to plan, and organization.
  • High ethical standards, exhibiting confidentiality, honesty and integrity.
  • Commitment to transparency, clear and open communication; excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Skill in maintaining impartiality and objectivity and cultivating trust in relationships with all employees, including a recognition that ones objectivity may be influenced by ones race, social class, disability status, gender, and other factors.
  • Experience or commitment to working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
