Summary:

HIM Outpatient Coding Coordinator works closely with the Coding Manager and staff to plan, coordinate, and execute small projects within the coding area. The role aims to improve the accuracy, integrity, and quality of patient data by assisting with outpatient monthly quality monitoring. Responsibilities include researching ICD-10 and CPT coding regulatory changes and rules, preparing educational materials, and supporting outpatient quality monitoring. The coordinator may help reeducate staff, train new processes, and assist with onboarding and training of outpatient coding staff. Maintaining current knowledge of coding rules and regulatory changes affecting ICD-10 and CPT coding is essential. The role promotes teamwork, fosters interdisciplinary relationships, and provides excellent customer service.Education & Experience:
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of three years of current, continuous acute care hospital outpatient coding experience required.
  • Inpatient coding and APRDRG experience preferred; advanced knowledge of code sets, guidelines, and principles highly desired; pediatric coding experience preferred.
  • Demonstrates superior coding and critical thinking skills, with the ability to solve problems using current policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulations.
  • Proficient in navigating electronic medical records, coding decision support tools, encoders, abstracting & billing systems, and other computer applications.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) required.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal guidance, maintaining focus and productivity.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; ability to maintain confidentiality and build positive relationships.
  • Excellent customer service skills in all interactions.
  • Successful coding knowledge and skills assessment with 90% accuracy or above prior to hire.
  • Skills assessment demonstrating ability to articulate coding guidelines and procedures effectively.

Certification/Licensure:

  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT) required; Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) preferred.
