Highway & Roads Market Sector DirectorPrimary Responsibilities

Market Sector Directors (MSD) are one part of the HDR matrix management structure that drive our business. The HDR Highway & Roads (H&R) market sector is the largest, representing nearly $1B in annual revenue globally. It includes clients that own and operate highways, toll roads, city, town, and local roads, and bridge structures. HDR provides services like bridge and highway design, traffic engineering, transportation planning, and tolling services.

This role requires understanding of H&R clients, their funding, revenue streams, and governmental structures. Responsibilities are divided into:

  • Market leadership and business development (~70%)
  • Staff development (20%)
  • Support to Operations (10%)

The Director sets the vision for HDR's strategy to expand and serve clients in this sector, supporting growth initiatives, staff development, and strategic planning, in coordination with leadership teams. They maintain communication with regional and area leaders to implement growth and operational plans.

The role involves managing relationships with government agencies in the US, Canada, UK, Middle East, and Australia, expanding HDR's market outside the US, and engaging with local clients to bring expertise in design, planning, and management services.

Key duties include supporting business development, client management, strategic growth initiatives, and maintaining HDR's marketplace reputation. The Director also leads efforts in staff development, technical excellence, and operational support, including monitoring performance metrics, resource sharing, and quality assurance.

Qualifications

Preferred:

  • 20+ years in highway/bridge planning or engineering
  • PE license or equivalent
  • Leadership in industry associations like AASHTO, IBTTA

Required:

  • Bachelor's in Engineering or related field
  • At least 12 years of industry experience with leadership roles
  • Excellent communication and client management skills
  • Business acumen in budgeting and operational management
  • Active participation in HDR's culture
