You will inherit an early-stage platform and be responsible for critical architectural decisions and building towards major pilots, ensuring impact and reliability in classrooms.

Responsibilities
  • Set technical direction and system architecture: Lead the engineering roadmap, make core decisions on infrastructure, instructional logic, and speech functionalities, balancing scalability and performance.
  • Drive cross-functional delivery: Collaborate with product, design, and learning teams to translate instructional goals into technical systems. Manage a distributed team and sprint process for timely execution.
  • Integrate speech and AI capabilities: Evaluate third-party ASR tools, collaborate with vendors, and improve model accuracy through testing and data analysis.
  • Build classroom-ready systems: Ensure reliability in diverse environments, including noisy classrooms and dialect variations, using performance metrics to enhance instructional fidelity.
  • Develop a learning-aware platform: Design adaptive data systems that collect insights to inform product improvements and support research.
  • Champion inclusive engineering: Prioritize access and inclusivity, incorporate educator feedback, and lead equity-focused evaluation.
  • Grow the team and culture: Recruit, mentor, and collaborate with engineers, shaping a culture of innovation and delivery.
  • Qualifications

You should have 8+ years in software engineering, with experience in system architecture and backend development. Key skills include:

    • Leadership in cross-functional teams and aligning tech with product vision.
    • Experience with build vs. buy decisions and third-party integrations.
    • Designing scalable, evolving systems.
    • Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, Kubernetes, Docker), backend frameworks (Node.js, MongoDB), and CI/CD pipelines.
    • Knowledge of data privacy standards (FERPA, COPPA).
    • Experience with Agile development, building educational tools, and inclusive UX.
    Preferred Skills
    • Experience with speech technology, especially for children.
    • Familiarity with generative AI or adaptive learning systems.
    • Background in EdTech or early-stage startups.
    Values
    • Be cosmically urgent: Act with urgency to benefit all and foster a sense of somebodyness .
    • Stay curious: Continuously ask how might we?
    • Excellence over perfection: Focus on outcomes and meaningful interactions.
    • Do hard things humanely: Face challenges courageously.
    • Invest in collective success: Embrace collaboration and shared responsibility.
