Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking an accomplished, visionary, and people-focused leader to serve as Group Leader (GL) for Compute, a cornerstone group within the Research Computing Division (RC). As one of three foundational pillars within RC, Compute, Software, and Data, this group provides the technical backbone of advanced computational infrastructure that accelerates scientific discovery across all PNNL mission areas. The Compute Group is at the forefront of a rapidly evolving computing landscape, one that blends the scale of high-performance computing (HPC), the flexibility of commercial cloud, and the intelligence of edge and AI-enabled systems. The GL will lead an advanced team of engineers and technologists responsible for architecting and operating the hybrid, scalable infrastructure that powers modern science. This role demands a blend of strategic vision, technical fluency, team development, and organizational influence. This position is a rare opportunity to shape the next decade of computing expertise at a national laboratory, influence DOE-wide strategies, and collaborate with leading technology companies and federal partners on some of the most critical challenges of our time.
The Group Leader collaborates closely with peer leads in the Data and Software groups to ensure that computational infrastructure, data movement, and scientific applications are seamlessly integrated. Together, these teams provide foundational support to the Center for Continuum Computing (C3), a lab-wide structure for advancing seamless scientific workflows across compute ecosystems. By designing cohesive, end-to-end environments that support scalable workflows, empower researchers with flexible tools, we will unencumber the researcher and accelerate the pace of discovery across the lab's mission areas.

Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements
In accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, new employees are required to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws. For foreign national candidates: If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) risk determination to maintain employment. Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
