Reports To: Chief Philanthropy Officer

Position Status: Full-time salaried, exempt from overtime regulations

Annual Salary Range: $70,000 - $85,000

About the Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence (BGCP):

In our 157 -year history, one thing has always remained the same: BGCP provides a safe space and structured programming for our city's youth to play, grow, and learn. Today, 88% of our members live under the poverty line. To assure them a bright future, BGCP works to break the cycle of poverty. That means addressing the structural issues that hold our kids back, including lack of access to educational programming, and lack of exposure to critical opportunities that develop their skills, talents, and passions. Today, BGCP runs eight sites throughout Providence, including buildings in the Fox Point, South Side and Wanskuck neighborhoods, two locations in Providence public housing sites, and three schools. Annually, BGCP provides 3,600 diverse youth between the ages of 6-18 a safe and secure environment for help with homework, childcare, mentoring, athletics,, and educational and career development opportunities.

Our mission: To enable and inspire children and youth, especially those from diverse or difficult circumstances, to reach their full potential as productive, responsible, and healthy members of their community, the State of Rhode Island, and the Nation.

Primary Function:

Grant writing, grant management, grant research, reporting, and monitoring, support of program evaluation and assessment processes, foundation, and corporate donor relations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with program staff and BGCP leadership, write and submit grant funding proposals to further the mission and goals of BGCP. Secure funding from foundations, corporations, and government sources. Current grant funding is approximately $1.8M+ from all sources.
  • Research prospective funding sources and develop applications/proposals to secure new funding using tools such as GrantWatch.
  • Maintain grants management system to record and track applications and reporting deadlines, maintain grant and funder information, organize task management, track awards and other grant actions, etc.
  • Present funding sources with detailed information about BGCP's history, structure, programs, staffing, strategies, impact on youth, and innovations to support case for funding.
  • Complete or oversee completion of grant reports following required timelines of funders.
  • Help orient key staff to each grant's details, how various grants will be carried out, budgets, timelines, evaluation processes, and reporting requirements. Provide support and guidance to staff as needed, to ensure successful grant implementation, evaluation, and reporting.
  • Communicate with Finance Department regularly to provide information for grants accounting, labor cost distributions, etc.
  • Seek and analyze budget information to monitor status of grant-related line items and adjust in submission strategies as needed.
  • Provide information to funders as requested, both in regular grant reporting and as requests arise.
  • Maintain positive relationships with funding sources; help cultivate positive image of BGCP in the philanthropic community.
  • Contribute to strategic discussions among leadership team about development and cultivation of funding sources, program direction, budget development, operations, community partnerships and more.

Requirements and Personal Capabilities:

Required:

  • 4-year college degree in English, Communications, or related area
  • 2 years of grant writing experience
  • Ability to communicate key grant proposal elements to the funder in a compelling manner
  • Ability to manage and meet extensive calendar deadlines
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Excellent oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Intermediate-to-advanced skills in Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel, and Outlook (or similar software)

Preferred:

  • 3-5 years' experience in grant writing preferred, with a proven track record of success
  • Knowledge of Boys & Girls Clubs and Youth Development strategies
  • Knowledge of grants management database systems
  • Experience managing federal grant awards

What does success look like?

  • Budget goals are met or exceeded for foundations, corporations, and government sources
  • Grant proposal deadlines are met
  • Grant reporting deadlines are met
  • Staff involved in managing and implementing grants are fully informed as to their responsibilities and accountability
  • Grant information is regularly communicated to Finance Department for accounting purposes
  • Grants management system is well maintained and regularly updated
  • Funders are confident in BGCP's ability to achieve desired outcomes for youth, and to manage resources wisely and impactfully

Full-Time Position Employee Benefits:

  • Medical/Dental/Vision insurance: organization pays 75% of monthly premium for individual and eligible family members if applicable

  • Retirement plan: Boys & Girls Clubs of America 401k plan available after 1 year of FT employment and age 21 or over; company currently contributes 3% of employee's annual salary; employee can make contributions through payroll deduction; employee vesting after 3 years.

To perform this job successfully an individual must meet the physical requirements necessary to complete the essential job duties. Physical/Mental Demands and Work Environment

  • Background check requirements: Ability to receive clearances for background checks and other pre-employment requirements, including but not limited to national, state, and local background checks (including continuous monitoring criminal records watch); RI DCYF C.A.N.T.S. check; education and employment verifications; reference checks; drug screening (for illegal drugs).
  • Professional office environment: limited or no travel required.
  • Ability to simultaneously manage multiple tasks with varying deadlines.
  • Ability to clearly exchange ideas, facts, numbers, and/or technical information, in person, by telephone, fax, email or correspondence.
  • Physical requirements include sight, hearing, sitting for six + hours a day, standing, stooping, the ability to lift three to five pounds; skills essential for successful communications include speaking, writing, and reading comprehension.
  • Must have a car and valid driver's license. Must be able to use own vehicle for business purposes (i.e., picking up supplies, visiting vendors and donors).
