Job Overview

The Barnard College Mellon-Mays Fellowship Program (MMUF) seeks a graduate student to serve as its new Graduate Student Mentor. Established in 1988, MMUF aims to expand academic faculties and leadership in higher education, emphasizing the value of the humanities and related disciplines. Named after Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, it offers undergraduates opportunities to work with faculty mentors in research and activities encouraging pursuit of a PhD in humanities and humanistic sciences. The program also provides practical and intellectual support for students aiming for academic careers. The Graduate Student Mentor plays a vital role alongside faculty and administrative coordinators in administering and guiding the program.

Responsibilities
  • Communicate with current and past fellows, act as liaison between faculty, staff, and students, coordinate meetings, manage RSVPs, and maintain a database of alumni.
  • Coordinate the program's bi-monthly luncheon meetings, including logistics like booking rooms, AV, and catering.
  • Organize the annual MMUF Workshop, including venue arrangements, scheduling, and matching new fellows with mentors.
  • Serve as a role model and resource for fellows, sharing experiences and advice on academic careers and graduate school applications.
Additional DutiesAdministrative
  • Gather fellow updates for reports, manage bookings, send reminders, update Google Drive, schedule interviews, and participate in selecting new fellows.
Programming
  • Assist in planning meetings and events, organize retreats, create promotional materials, and present on graduate school topics.
Miscellaneous
  • Meet with fellows as needed, coordinate conference abstracts, handle evaluations, organize exit interviews, develop newsletters, and communicate with alumni.
Qualifications
  • Must be enrolled in a graduate program.
  • This is a hybrid position requiring presence on campus every Friday for meetings, events, and retreats.
Compensation

Pay rate is $23/hour for approximately 5-10 hours per week.
