Job Description :

  • A Geographic Information Systems Specialist operates a GIS geo-processing system and performs technical geospatial information system input, including research, quality control, spatial and attribute data capture, automation, editing, and maintenance, application design and programming, maintenance/configuration of hardware and basic system assessment, to produce a wide range of geospatial data, databases, maps, reports, and applications, and data exports and files; may produce spatial and non-spatial data for studies that provide technical assistance relating to the design, construction, operation, evaluation, and maintenance of public/private facilities, zoning and planning, and demographics.

    Minimum Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in geographic information systems, engineering, geography, environmental science, earth science, computer science, or in a closely related field; and completion of 12 semester or 18 quarter units in geographic information systems; or
  • Two years of full-time paid experience utilizing any level of ESRI's ArcGIS Product suite software, Autodesk Mapping Products, or other GIS software utilizing a geospatially enabled Relational Data Base Management System (RDBMS); or
  • Current employment with the City of Los Angeles with two years of full-time paid experience utilizing geographic information systems software, which incorporates a Relational Data Base Management System (RDBMS).

Only applicants possessing one or more of the following specific professional industry certification(s) at the time of filing may be considered for appointment to fill such positions:

    Examination Weights

    The examination will consist of an on-line advisory technical exercise, a presentation, and an interview. In the interview, the following competencies may be evaluated: Analytical Ability; Learning Ability; Attention to Detail; Initiative; Oral Communication; Written Communication; Reading Comprehension, including knowledge of: how to read, interpret, and extract information from maps; how to identify quality control issues, potential discrepancies, or errors in maps; Job Knowledge, including knowledge of: various geographic information system (GIS) programs and software, such as ArcGIS, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, ArcMap, and AutoCAD; the best representation and necessary elements for displaying data, such as bar charts, line graphs, pie charts, layout, color, coordination, color intensity, legend placement, and shading; projected or geographic coordinate systems, such as North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 83), California State Plane Coordinate System Zone 5, latitude and longitude; various geographic information system (GIS) databases and applications, such as GeoHub, and/or other system applications; different programming or scripting languages, such as Python, JavaScript, or Arcade sufficient to create model builders, revise maps, or customize applications; necessary mapping principles and components, such as streets, dimensions, north arrow, geometric construction, scaling, and proportions; and other necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.

    As part of the interview, candidates will be required to make a presentation to the interview board about an issue related to geographic information systems. While the interview raters will not assign a separate score to the presentation, the interview raters will consider the appropriateness, practicality, and effectiveness of the presentation in their overall evaluations of the candidate's qualifications. Candidates should expect the interviewers to discuss the oral presentation with them during their interviews.
