Summary of Position

The Director of Genetics oversees the technical and operational aspects of the Genetics department, leading process improvements, staff development, and research efforts to enhance test offerings and performance.

Key Job Elements

• Manage the operation of the Genetics department to ensure efficiency and quality.
• Maintain productivity, turnaround times, and sample quality standards.
• Evaluate and validate new procedures and instruments.
• Monitor quality control programs and ensure compliance with standards.
• Develop and update SOPs and communicate policies.
• Manage staffing needs, participate in recruitment, and evaluate staff performance.
• Ensure a safe working environment and compliance with regulations.
• Participate in proficiency testing, budgeting, and departmental meetings.
• Stay current with developments in cytogenetics and FISH through ongoing education.
• Coordinate training programs for new employees.
• Perform other related tasks as assigned.

QualificationsKnowledge/Experience

• Bachelor of Science in a laboratory science.
• NCA/ASCP Certification.
• Continuing education as required by licensing or certification agencies.
• At least 10 years of genetics experience in a reference laboratory, including 3-5 years in a supervisory role.

Skills

• Strong communication skills and teamwork ability.
• Knowledge of laboratory procedures and instrumentation.
• Problem-solving skills for technical and instrumentation issues.
