The Genetic Counselor 3 will serve as a designated expert and consultant of genetic counseling for adult patients participating in cancer research projects. The incumbent is responsible for providing cancer risk assessment, genetic testing, and communication of results to patients, research participants, researchers and clinicians via pre- and post-test genetic counseling; and making appropriate recommendations and referrals for ongoing medical management. The Genetic Counselor 3 will be expected to maintain and manage an independent workload and work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams in laboratories in the Genome Center and Department of Public Health Sciences. In addition to general genetic counseling duties, the incumbent will be responsible for designing, administering, and evaluating specialized counseling programs and materials in English and Spanish, particularly adapted to native Spanish-speaking Latino populations with low levels of literacy; designing and conducting ongoing research programs; drafting and contributing to research protocols and academic and non-academic publications; overseeing training of Promotoras/es de salud (Community Health Workers), researchers, and other clinical and non-clinical staff. This is a 75% time and grant funded position. Funding is contingent on subsequent renewal and/or award of related research projects and grants. The Genetic Counselor 3 will need to be available for travel to community health clinics in California.     American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) Certified Genetic Counselor (CGC)Board certified in Genetic Counseling by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) and licensed as a Genetic Counselor by the State of California with at least two years of demonstrated genetic counseling experience and advanced knowledge.Licensing must be maintained in good standing (renewal every three years).Master's degree in clinical Genetic Counseling from an accredited training program.At least two years of demonstrated professional experience in genetic counseling.Experienced in community engagement and working with underserved Latino populations.Demonstrated experience (through peer-reviewed publications) and ability in writing manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals in cancer genetics of Latino populations, and in preparation of research protocols.Fluency in Spanish; ability to read, write and speak in Spanish and English at a graduate level of professional proficiency.Ability to apply knowledge from the areas of cancer genetics and other related medical specialties.Demonstrated counseling skill and ability to provide genetic counseling with minimal supervision.Demonstrated skill in writing, documenting clinical interventions and comprehensive counseling reports.Culturally aware, particularly in topics related to health and genetic counseling for Latino populations.Ability to perform genetic counseling to native Spanish speakers with low levels of literacy.Ability to deal sensitively and effectively with patients and staff, in a culturally appropriate manner.Demonstrated awareness of psychological aspects of genetic counseling and ability to interact effectively with clients and families in stressful situations.Knowledge of research techniques to develop, implement, and evaluate genetics and research projects.Ability to communicate effectively over the telephone, in writing, and in person in Spanish and English.Ability to collaborate with a multidisciplinary genetics/health team while providing genetic counseling.Strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.Excellent customer service and problem-solving skills.Ability to deliver presentations to professional and lay groups.Analytical skills to evaluate information, practices, and procedures to formulate logical and objective conclusions and to make recommendations for effective solutions, strategies, and approaches.Ability to work well independently, with little supervision, and in a team setting.Must be able to work as a team member with other practice staff and project management staff in a professional and courteous manner.Ability to pay close attention to detail.Ability to work occasional overtime as work demands.Ability for occasional travel within California, domestically within the continental U.S., and possibly to international destinations.       Previous genetic counseling experience with cancer patient population. Experience with Outlook, Epic, REDCap, Progeny (or other family history software) or demonstrated ability to learn.
