Job Title: General Supervisor/Quality Assurance Manager

Reports To: Laboratory Director

St. John's University invites applications for the General Supervisor/Quality Assurance Manager. Position Summary

The incumbent will be responsible for overseeing testing personnel, ensuring that laboratory operations adhere to established performance specifications, managing the Quality Assurance Program, and implementing corrective actions as necessary. The role requires a strong understanding of laboratory procedures, proficiency testing, and quality assurance activities. This position plays a crucial part in maintaining high standards for patient test performance and ensuring the laboratory's compliance with quality assurance requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Patient Test Procedures: follow the laboratory's pre-analytic and analytic procedures and maintain records of tests.
  • Maintain records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
  • Adhere to quality assurance procedures, including documenting all quality control activities, instrument and equipment verifications, and maintenance and preventive maintenance.
  • Follow laboratory policies and procedures when test systems are not within established performance specifications.
  • Identify and document problems that may adversely affect test performance and notify the supervisor, assistant director(s), or director.
  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.

Laboratory Supervision

  • Supervise testing personnel and monitor performance to ensure adherence to specifications.
  • Review quality control, scheduled instrument and equipment maintenance, and other quality assurance activities.
  • Initiate preventive or remedial actions when test procedures deviate from established specifications; ensure test results are not reported until corrective action is taken.
  • Verify that personnel are trained and deemed proficient prior to testing on patient specimens independently.
  • Ensure competency assessments are conducted as needed and take action if personnel do not perform as expected.

Quality Assurance Program Management

  • Collaborate with clinical laboratory director and technical director to set quality goals, performance indicators, and thresholds.
  • Regularly review quality goals and ensure performance expectations are met.
  • Monitor deviations from quality goals or performance expectations.
  • Schedule and perform audits of systems and processes at least annually and implement corrective actions for identified problems.
  • Implement and maintain Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) processes, quality indicator monitoring, and internal audits.
  • Manage documentation of the Quality Management System and participate in management reviews.

Qualifications

The laboratory supervisor must meet one of the following requirements:

  • a) Be a physician licensed to practice medicine or osteopathy in the State of New York, or hold a doctoral degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science with qualification as a clinical laboratory technologist and at least one year of pertinent laboratory experience after graduation.
  • b) Hold a Master of Arts or Master of Science in a chemical, physical, or biological science; qualify as a clinical laboratory technologist; and have at least two years of pertinent laboratory experience after graduation.
  • c) Be qualified as a clinical laboratory technologist with at least four years of pertinent laboratory experience after qualification.

Additional Skills

  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements (e.g., CLIA, CAP) and compliance standards in laboratory environments.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory procedures, quality control, and quality assurance standards.
  • Familiarity with proficiency testing and corrective action documentation.
  • Adherence to competency requirements.
  • Strong leadership and staff supervision abilities.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to solve complex problems and make decisions under pressure.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Work Environment

  • Clinical laboratory environment with responsibilities spanning administrative and operational duties.
  • Adherence to laboratory safety protocols when handling biological samples, reagents, and chemicals.
  • Interaction with laboratory personnel and management, with periodic audits and assessments.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with occasional long hours based on operational needs.

Salary: In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $83,600 - $94,050. St. John's considers factors such as scope and responsibilities, work experience, education, key skills, internal equity, market context, and budget when extending an offer.
