Job Description :

Purpose:

The purpose of the General Manager I (GM) position is to manage a QSR restaurant or a small cluster of restaurants or points-of-sale in close proximity, with sales generally up to $5M. The GM ensures the restaurant is clean, staffed, open for business, and operates to high operational and financial standards. The GM uses broad discretion and judgment to make leadership decisions and is responsible for the overall success of the restaurant.

Essential Functions:

  • Open and Close: Ensures all assistant managers and staff recognize the importance of closing the restaurant to prepare for opening, holding Shift Managers accountable for executing all closing and opening checklist/requirements.
  • Staffing/Deployment: Understands, adopts, and demonstrates manager behaviors that foster employee engagement. Deploys staff and resources to maximize profitability and accepts P&L responsibility. Assigns tasks, prepares schedules, and ensures shift coverage. Provides support, coaching, and encouragement to staff. Conducts hiring, termination, and promotion decisions, promoting HMSHost as an employer of choice. Ensures diversity and inclusion are actively practiced. Manages onboarding and offboarding activities, including compliance and training. Reads and understands financial data to monitor progress towards goals. Recognizes staff contributions and supports recognition initiatives. Champions Employee Engagement behaviors and maintains current contact information for associates.
  • Product Availability/Working Equipment: Ensures daily orders are prepared, stocks are appropriate, and teaches associates order procedures. Oversees receiving, invoice processing, and vendor contact for supply issues. Maintains proficiency in management systems. Monitors and maintains equipment, schedules repairs, and manages responses to audits. Minimizes waste and participates in food donation programs.
  • Brand Knowledge/Proficiency: Assesses staff skills, conducts training, embraces technology, and maintains knowledge of brand standards, CBAs, lease agreements, and protocols. Develops strategies to increase revenue.
  • Visual/Vibe/Appeal: Manages daily activities of associates. Uses judgment to resolve customer and staff issues. Provides ongoing feedback and implements marketing programs to drive revenue, complying with promotional activities and collaborating with support teams.
  • Safety: Understands and ensures compliance with all safety, sanitary, and health standards. Holds managers accountable for safety standards. Trains staff on wellness checks and COVID-19 protocols. Performs health and safety activities as per guidelines.
  • Reporting relationship and other important information:

    • The GMI position is an exempt role under the Fair Labor Standards Act, reporting to the Director of Operations or similar leadership. It involves a varied schedule, including opening, busy, and closing shifts to oversee restaurant activities across different times.

    Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Work Environment:

    • At least 3 years of restaurant P&L management experience, with a total of 5-7 years in relevant restaurant roles. Experience in similar restaurant types is necessary.
    • Graduation from a Food Service Management or Culinary program may substitute for some experience.
    • Demonstrates team management, delegation, and issue resolution skills. Knowledge of HMSHost policies, products, and standards or the ability to learn them quickly. Ability to read and understand instructions, policies, menus, and standards, and communicate effectively.
