Job Description :
The Jefferson County Library's Northwest Branch is looking for a creative, driven individual who is committed to working in a collaborative work environment to provide access to genealogical and local history specific library services and programming to our community. Our Genealogy Department routinely assists patrons with genealogy research and helps patrons navigate our many physical and online resources to that end. They also provide high quality programming across wide range of topics encompassing both local history and genealogy, delivering in-house instruction or seeking outsourced instructors about everything from historical true crime to high quality instruction about researching family histories. Our Genealogy team members are experts in the resources our library provides to the public, and are dedicated to connecting people to those services so we can be everyone's place to learn, grow, connect, and achieve.Scheduling:
  • Part time, 20 hours per week (firm)
  • Evenings and Saturday shifts are required
  • Paid holidays and vacation time
Skills and Qualities:
  • Prior professional genealogical research experience preferred
  • Competency using Ancestry, FamilySearch, Fold3, PastPerfect, and print research materials preferred
  • Past experience in professional archiving a plus
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • A driven and compassionate attitude
  • Ability to multi-task and remain organized in a fast-paced environment
  • Willingness to work in a collaborative team environment
Responsibilities:
  • Provide basic research assistance to our patrons to help them begin or continue their own genealogical research.
  • Connect patrons with research tools to answer reference and general knowledge questions.
  • Curate community-relevant programs and/or partner with outside presenters to provide timely, accurate, and enjoyable activities for members of the community, with a focus on family and local history.
  • Work in tandem with pertinent staff members to market programs, and represent the library in the community.
  • Become a passport agent.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent, plus a minimum 60 hours college credit or four years related experience in library setting with progressively increasing job responsibilities, or four years of specialized training and experience in a specialty area (history, genealogy, or related fields preferred). Prior library experience a plus.
  • Prior experience using a multi-line phone system, planning and executing programs or presentations, and familiarity with a wide range of research databases and materials are all a plus.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
