A barback's job is to support bartenders and other staff members to ensure a bar runs smoothly. Some of their responsibilities include:
- Stocking supplies: Barbacks restock liquor bottles, kegs, garnishes, ice, and other supplies
- Cleaning: Barbacks clean glassware, tables, chairs, railings, and other surfaces
- Preparing: Barbacks prepare garnishes and the bartender's work station
- Assisting with opening and closing: Barbacks help open and close the bar
- Inventory management: Barbacks assist with inventory management and reorder processes
- Training: Barbacks may assist with training new team members
- Communicating: Barbacks communicate with bartenders and inform the manager on duty of any irregularities
- Customer service: Barbacks may chat with customers who have questions
Barbacks need to be able to multitask, work in a fast-paced environment, and maintain a friendly demeanor. They also need to be physically able to lift heavy objects like beer kegs and carry crates of alcohol.
