Candidates who pass each phase of the recruitment process will be notified of the official examination dates.The City of Burbank is accepting Fire Fighter (Lateral) applicants. We are specifically looking for those candidates who possess a current State of California EMT-P or current National Registry Paramedic Certification. We will be conducting an expedited lateral Fire Fighter/Paramedic recruitment. A screening will be conducted and any candidate who does not have two years of experience as a paid professional Fire Fighter with a municipal fire department with the past three years will be eliminated. Based on your experience as a Fire Fighter with your agency, you may be hired at a higher step than the bottom of the salary range. The salary range is $6,716 - $9,033 per month. + 20% percent paramedic bonus, 5% EMT bonus, up to 7.5% longevity bonus, educational and bilingual incentives, tuition reimbursement program, and medical/dental benefits upon completion of orientation (see below) and Burbank Fire Department certification as a Paramedic. Firefighter/Paramedics will start with a five (5) week orientation to acclimate them to learn and practice Burbank Fire Department operations. This recruitment may consist of an oral interview, paramedic skills assessment, Biddle exam, background, and psychological and medical exams. PLEASE APPLY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO GET AN INTERVIEW.Under supervision, to respond to alarms and protect life and property; to participate in fire prevention, training, station apparatus, and equipment maintenance activities; and perform related work as required. Essential FunctionsResponds to alarms, assists in fire suppression, and emergency medical services, including lifesaving and rescue; operates communication equipment; performs forcible entry; scales ladders; pulls, raises, and lowers heavy loads; directs hose streams; operates chemical extinguishers; works in areas where smoke may be present; performs salvage operations; assists in maintenance of fire apparatus and equipment; maintains fire station and grounds; makes required fire prevention inspections; participates in required training programs; performs minor fire hydrant maintenance; participates in preparing exhibits and giving demonstrations for fire prevention and public education purposes; assists with emergency operation programs and services; when assigned, serves as an acting Fire Engineer; subject to recall for major alarms when off duty; maintains records; participates in physical fitness programs; drives on City business; responds to emergencies when off duty and recalled. Minimum QualificationsEmployment Standards: Knowledge of elementary physics, chemistry, and mechanics; modern fire prevention and suppression methods; equipment, supplies; technical firefighting techniques and principals of hydraulics applied to fire suppression; use and maintenance of firefighting equipment and apparatus; fire hazards; principles of combustion and cause of fire; Incident Command System (ICS); City geography and street layout; community resources such as personnel, equipment, water supplies, and communication; building materials and methods of construction, basic arithmetic; departmental policies, rules, and regulations; federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing fire prevention and safety; emergency medical services, lifesaving, and rescue techniques.Skill in mechanical aptitude; problem solving; the use of personal computer; interacting and communicating tactfully and effectively with a diverse population in stressful and difficult situations; gaining cooperation through discussion and persuasion; discerning potentially dangerous situations; making independent judgments and decisions based on the appropriate application of policies, procedure, experience, and training; standard radio transmitting procedures.Ability to learn technical firefighting principles, techniques, and principles of hydraulics applied to fire suppression; understand and follow oral and written directions; keep records and prepare reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the public; learn, comprehend, and apply Fire Department policies, rules, instructions, literature, and other applicable laws, codes, and regulations; maintain a professional demeanor during stressful situations; work indoors in an office environment and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions while exposed to a variety of hazardous elements, including extreme heat; work in elevated or confined spaces; function within the ICS structure; maintain physical agility and stamina to perform essential functions.Education/Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent.Age: Must be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment. Citizenship: United States citizen or applied for citizenship at least one year prior to last day for filing application.
