The Family Support Advocates (FSAs)- provides on-site responses and leads family donation conversations by advocating for organ donation and supports families throughout the process. At its core, Family Support Advocates strive to meet and or exceed the monthly authorization goal to improve Organ Donation through education, supportive services, and relationship building with key hospital stakeholders. Responsibilities
  • Delivers high-quality bereavement support to potential donor families.
  • Offers donation in an empowering and inspiring manner. Responsible for educating potential donor's Next-of-Kin (NOK) about donation options, status of donor designation, or requesting authorization for donation from legal NOK.
  • Obtains authorization or disclosure with first person authorization and conducts a uniform donor risk assessment questionnaire (UDRAI) with appropriate NOK/surrogate of the potential organ donor.
  • Provides rapid on-site support for donor families at hospitals.
  • Works in strong collaboration with hospital personnel, LiveOnNY's Family Engagement Administrator on Call (FE AOC) Administrator-on-Call (AOC), and clinical staff to evaluate and determine the best time to discuss the opportunity for donation with potential donor families.
  • Works closely with donor family and LiveOnNY's clinical staff to complete accurate answers to UDRAI.
  • Ensures effective communication and strong collaboration with donor families, hospital personnel, physicians, related donation agencies, and other LiveOnNY staff.
  • Evaluates and determines bereavement support needed for potential donor families throughout the entire designated service area.
  • Responsible for educating the potential donor's authorized person(s) about the opportunity for donation and requesting authorization and/or notifying them of status of donor registry accordingly.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to diverse populations and their beliefs. Remains culturally competent through continued education opportunities.
Qualifications Do you have the education and experience to be a Family Support Advocate?
  • BA/BS in counseling, psychology or social services, crisis intervention, or education or two years' experience in organ procurement consent, with proven track record, required.
  • Master's Degree in Social Work, or related field, is preferred. Excellent knowledge of the dynamics of grief and bereavement.
  • Or Experience in trauma/critical care setting helpful.Relevant working experience: Patient Services/Relations or Navigator, Sales, Motivational Interview Training, Child Life Specialist, EMT/Paramedic, Customer Service Representative, Crisis Management, Substance Abuse Counselor, Health Administrator/ Community Case worker/ Social worker, Nursing-LPN, Educator/Teacher.
  • Or Certification or license in nursing, social work, grief counseling or crisis intervention preferred.
Skills: Knowledge of the principles of critical care. Knowledge of and ability to function in hospital setting. Ability to work with individual(s) in a bereavement/crisis situation; good interpersonal skills. Ability to work as a team member. Time Management and good organizational skills required. Ability to research information, draw conclusions, and make recommendations. Computer literate (e.g. Microsoft, Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point). Preferred skills: Ability to connect with an audience, Strategic Planning, Public Speaking, Active Listening, Ability to collaborate with multi-faceted professionals, Humility, Adaptable, Receptive, Ability to grasp new concepts quickly, Highly Organized, Understand medical terminology, Ability to problem solve, Emotional Intelligence, Mindfulness, Ability to set professional boundaries, Persuasive, Ability to De-escalate, Empathy, Outstanding communication skills, both written and oral.
