IFSI is operated as a continuing education and public service activity by the Universityof Illinois.PRIMARY POSITION FUNCTION/SUMMARY:The Facility Operations Specialist is responsible for themaintenance and operation of the Illinois Fire Service Institute facility.These responsibilities include firefighting and rescue training props andstructures, buildings, equipment, materials, grounds, and tools used by theInstitute in its on-campus and field programs.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in assessing, planning, coordinating, constructing, and performing maintenance and repair activities on IFSI firefighting training buildings, firefighting and emergency training props, classrooms, office space, trailers, fire apparatus, equipment, and grounds in support of IFSI classes, programs, and activities.
- Assesses and makes minor repairs to all aspects of the facility and infrastructure, and when outside resources are needed controls appointments and admission of visitors related to facilities work.
- Prepare recommendations for improvements of facilities necessary to maintain efficient operation of the 28-acre facility in general and the firefighter training buildings and props in particular.
- Assist in training and supervising hourly employees to assist with the above two responsibilities.
- Prepare requisitions for supplies, keeps receipts of goods and materials, and maintains inventory of University/IFSI property.
- Prepare annual or other periodic reports on operation of the University facility and assist with budget preparation including inspection and assessment of all mechanical systems, fire and emergency training buildings and props, and office, classroom, firefighting research, and library buildings.
QUALIFICATIONS:Required: 1. High School Diploma or equivalent. 2. Any one or combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) from the categories below: A. college course work in facility management, operations management, or a closely related field, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
- 60 semester hours or an Associate's Degree equals one (1) year (12 months)
B. training from a vocational, technical, or an armed forces program which includes building operations such as coordination of building maintenance, construction management, hospitality, or closely related experience. C. work experience which includes building operations such as coordination of building maintenance and work orders, construction management, hospitality, or closely related experience.Preferred:
Demonstrated experience insteel prop development and fabrication. Demonstrated experience with plasmacutting equipment; CAD programming for plasma cutting tables; welding,fabricating, and design work; and stick, MIG and TIG welding methods.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
High degree of technicalknowledge specifically related to general construction, welding, and buildingand site maintenance as well as operation, maintenance of hand and power tools,equipment, and machinery. Generalknowledge of and familiarity with small engines, gas and diesel trucks,equipment, trailers and troubleshooting mechanical problems. Institutionalknowledge of IFSI. Demonstrated record of performance, positive attitude,humility, willingness to learn and work well with other coworkers.PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Some maintenance work will take place in unheated, poorly lighted areas such as the Training Tower and Structural Burn Buildings. Fire debris will often be in these areas immediately following training exercises. Outdoor work on a year-round basis is required. This position involves lifting, carrying, and moving equipment up to 50 pounds on a regular basis. This position also involves climbing ladders, operating power tools, and driving fire apparatus.Appointment InformationThis is a 100% full-time Civil Service Facility Operations Specialist position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after September 1, 2025. Salary range is $55,000-60,000.
