Volunteer Tutor Position Description

Literacy volunteer tutors serve in local schools and out-of-school settings. They tutor in grades First through Third by providing tutoring in essential early reading skills. Additionally, Tutors build positive relationships that support, encourage, and motivate students. They are committed to a minimum of four hours per week, over two days a week, for the entire school year, plus additional time for required training.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Work with designated students in either one-on-one or small groups of children
  • Tutor students using AARP Foundation Experience Corps-approved curriculum and materials
  • Model appropriate behavior for children
  • Nurture students' self-esteem and a positive attitude toward learning

  • Have a high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Agree to complete criminal background checks and tuberculosis tests

  • Successfully complete pre-service training
