The American Meteorological Society (“AMS” or “the Society”)—the nation's leading scientific and professional organization dedicated to the weather, water, and climate sectors—seeks applications and expressions of interest for its next Executive Director. This is a crucial moment for the Society, as it addresses increasing extreme weather events and shifts in federal research funding. We are looking for a strategic, relationship-oriented, and entrepreneurial leader to guide AMS into its next chapter.

With over 12,000 members from private, academic, and government sectors, AMS is uniquely positioned to promote scientific innovation, influence policy, educate the public, and amplify the voice of the weather, water, and climate community. The Society organizes major programs including annual meetings, scholarly journals, policy initiatives, educational projects, and certification programs. These efforts aim to enhance public understanding of environmental issues and serve societal needs effectively.

The Executive Director will work closely with a dedicated membership of over 1,500 volunteers and a professional staff of 72. The role involves developing the Society's identity, vision, and strategy, expanding its reach through new partnerships, strengthening fundraising, and innovating programs to meet emerging societal challenges. The ideal candidate is a values-driven leader with proven ability to manage teams, communicate across diverse groups, and ensure financial stability. Experience within the weather, water, and climate sectors is preferred.
