The Steam Railroading Institute (SRI) is seeking an inspiring, hands-on Executive Director to lead a dynamic nonprofit museum that operates a railroad artifact with nationwide visibility: Locomotive 1225. This full-time role is an exciting opportunity for a mission-driven professional to oversee operations, fundraising, community engagement, and strategic growth. The Executive Director will guide staff and volunteers, champion fundraising efforts, and serve as a community ambassador. Ideal candidates will have leadership, nonprofit management, and development experience, with a passion for preservation and public engagement. Salary ranges from $65k-$80k, DOE, with generous PTO, health, and retirement benefits.

The Executive Director is responsible for overall leadership, including organizational strategy, development, financial oversight, external relations, and daily operations. Reporting to the Board of Directors, this individual will oversee programs, excursions, and events, ensuring safety and success. Key responsibilities include:

  • Fundraising and Development: Lead strategies for individual giving, sponsorships, corporate partnerships, grants, campaigns, and planned giving. Cultivate donor relationships to support sustainability.
  • Strategic and Financial Management: Develop and execute strategic plans with the Board. Oversee budgets, financial reports, and compliance.
  • Program Oversight and Operations: Ensure safe delivery of programs and events. Supervise staff and enforce safety standards.
  • External and Community Relations: Build relationships with partners, railroads, civic groups, and the community.
  • Capital Improvements and Facilities: Oversee infrastructure projects, maintenance, and long-term planning.

Ideal Candidate Qualifications:

  • Leadership experience in a nonprofit or business, preferably in 501(c)(3)s.
  • Success in fundraising, including major gifts and grants.
  • Operational and financial expertise, with budget management skills.
  • Ability to inspire staff and volunteers with integrity and transparency.
  • Experience working with a nonprofit Board and strategic planning.
  • Excellent communication and public speaking skills.
  • Commitment to safety, compliance, and operational excellence.
  • Familiarity with the railroad industry or historic preservation is a plus.
  • Ability to work on-site in Owosso, Michigan, with occasional travel.

Physical Requirements: Ability to access rail equipment and facilities safely, including climbing stairs and ladders.
