Founded in 1921, the Netherland-America Foundation (NAF) seeks to further strengthen the bonds between the Netherlands and the United States by funding cultural, educational, and business exchanges between the two countries. Franklin D. Roosevelt was one of the NAF s founders. Our programs include NAF-Fulbright Fellowships for talented Dutch and American scholars, internship programs for high-achieving low-income students, a student loan program and various programs in the arts, business, public policy, and historic preservation. The NAF raises funds primarily through special events, but also through membership contributions, grants, annual fund donations, major gifts, and general donations to support its mission and growing programs. The NAF is hiring an Executive Director (ED) as its chief executive officer. Reporting to the Chair of the Board of Directors, the ED will have overall responsibility for the NAF s general management and for the execution of its mission. We are looking for an enthusiastic leader with management and financial experience who is technically astute, can manage a team of five staff in New York, support development and fundraising efforts, support managing events and represent the organization.

Salary is commensurate with experience, and ranges between $125,000 $175,000. Benefits include participation in the NAF s 403(b) plan with employer match, as well as the option to participate in the NAF s health plan (75% employer paid). This is a full-time position - the ED is expected to work 3-4 days from our offices in New York. The job requires occasional travel and after-hours work supporting the Chapters and the fundraisers.

Responsibilities include:

Leadership & Management:

  • Lead a diverse team of five NAF staff, promote an inclusive environment and ensure onboarding, recruitment and retention management.
  • Lead and manage the day-to-day operations of the organization and its programs.
  • Continue to develop and implement the strategic plan, based on data-driven projections and financials.
  • Report to the NAF s Chair with functional reporting and collaboration with the members of the Executive Committee and the Board.
  • Ensure ongoing local program excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality.
  • Actively engage and energize our volunteers, board members, event committees, alumni, partnering organizations, and funders.
  • Maintain and support a strong Board of Directors; seek and build Board involvement.
  • Along with other NAF representatives such as the Chair and Chapter members, reach out to the community to present the NAF, its vision and services through extensive use of social media, public presentations and by attending relevant gatherings.
  • Keep the NAF current and at the forefront of philanthropic organizations by implementing best practices in compliance with the laws governing the organization.

Fundraising & Communications:

  • Contribute to the fundraising and donor development function of the NAF.
  • Develop and execute our fundraising plan with the Development Manager and the Fundraising Committee Chair
  • Participate in identifying and cultivating corporate, individual and foundation sponsors.
  • Oversee the implementation of a Donor Development plan.
  • Expand local revenue generating and fundraising activities to support existing programs.
  • Deepen and refine all aspects of communications from web and social media presence to external relations with the goal of creating a stronger brand.

Team and Office Management:

  • Manage and nurture a high-performing team and play an active role in attracting, retaining, empowering and developing a best-in-class staff by setting objectives and coaching for excellence and promoting professional development.
  • Manage the NAF s income and expenses (P&L) against the budget determined by the Board of Directors and ensure that it is a financially sustainable organization with the resources to meet current and projected program growth:
  • Identify and implement cost-effective ways to deliver state-of-the-art programs;
  • Define and document processes that make our organization efficient and scalable;
  • Continue our automation efforts making our organization scalable and efficient.
  • Ensure effective systems to track scaling progress, and regularly evaluate program components.

Qualifications

All candidates should be motivated by the NAF s mission and activities, and have proven leadership, coaching, and relationship management experience: Bachelor s or advanced degree (ideally an MBA or similar degree), with at least 10 years of senior management experience, with a strong preference for those with previous leadership positions at philanthropic organizations of at least similar size who have managed and grown revenues and funding sources.

  • Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation.
  • Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage, and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget.
  • Previous demonstrated success engaging with Board of Directors and cultivating existing and new Board member relationships.
  • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.
  • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning.
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of volunteers.
  • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed.
