The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is a key part of the City's criminal justice system, focusing on reform initiatives to reduce jail populations while maintaining public safety. The DOC manages facilities and court operations across the five boroughs with over 7,500 staff.

Responsibilities

The Executive Director in the Strategic Initiatives Unit will oversee large-scale projects, including the Borough-Based Jails (BBJ) project, representing DOC interests in design, construction, and transition planning of new facilities. Key responsibilities include:

  • Oversee construction of correctional facilities in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx.
  • Lead project teams comprising project managers, construction specialists, and coordinators.
  • Manage and supervise capital construction projects from design to completion.
  • Coordinate with city agencies, design-build teams, and stakeholders to meet project goals.
  • Review and approve complex technical work related to construction systems.
  • Monitor project schedules and progress, ensuring timely delivery.
  • Represent the Department in meetings with contractors, regulatory agencies, and community groups.
  • Ensure compliance with standards for correctional facilities.
  • Collaborate with city agencies to implement the Borough-Based Jails Program.
  • Develop expertise in jail operations to inform project decisions.
  • Oversee site preparation, environmental testing, and infrastructure work.
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Baccalaureate degree and three years of experience in public relations or journalism, or an equivalent combination.
    Preferred Skills
    • Master's degree in Project Management, Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or related fields.
    • At least five years of executive management experience and knowledge of city government operations.
    • Deep understanding of construction procedures, regulations, and project management software.
    • Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
    • Experience in correctional facility requirements and managing large-scale projects.
    Additional Information

    Salary ranges from $120,000 to $150,000 annually. Candidates should be prepared for on-call work, after-hours, and weekend responsibilities. NYC residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment.
