I. Position Description
The Environmental Process Engineer is responsible for providing process engineering support for environmental compliance and process improvement.
II. Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Conduct research to develop and/or optimize processes.
- Provide engineering input into new projects requested for development, including equipment design, layout and specifications utilizing current engineering practices and Lean principles.
- Evaluate processes and equipment to ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations in addition to operating requirements.
- Develop, design, submit projects for approval and manage approved projects to improve plant performance.
- Troubleshoot process problems and identify solutions using FMEA and other methods.
- Determine the test methods, procedures, parts, and equipment needed to implement engineering changes.
- Interface with all levels of management and employees to gather information, perform risk assessments, and provide guidance for implementation.
- Manage projects related to environmental department equipment and process controls.
- Knowledge of all regulatory compliance permits with respect to AQMD, DTSC and LASD and other regulatory agencies with facility oversight.
- Monitor and maintain all CEMS equipment to ensure it's always in working condition.
- Establish and maintain inventory of parts and materials to maintain emissions control devices.
- Organize and conduct regulatory compliance testing/monitoring programs per regulatory requirements.
- Responsible for performing incident investigation for plant environmental incidents.
- Implement continuous improvement incentives using Lean tools and methods.
- Develop, update, and implement environmental department standard operating procedures, job safety analysis and standard work instructions.
- Provide training to department personnel on existing and improved processes to support the competency of operators.
- Other duties as assigned.
III. Pre-hire Requirements
- BS degree in chemical or environmental engineering or equivalent experience
- 5 years' experience in environmental field preferred
- Project management and strong analytical skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.

V. Physical Requirements And Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and may be exposed to extreme heat. The employee occasionally works in high precarious places and in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Employee must be able to wear required Personal Protective Equipment.
