Energy Engineer - Mid-level (NY)

This role is an integral part of our expanding team, providing commissioning, energy auditing, and retrofit services to multifamily, commercial, institutional, cultural/art center, and community center buildings in the NYC Metropolitan area and beyond. The position involves work on the NYC Accelerator Program, developed by the Mayor's Office of Climate and Sustainability, which offers free, personalized guidance for buildings across the five boroughs to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

We are seeking qualified candidates for our New York City office. The successful applicant will demonstrate the ability to perform the following tasks, utilizing the technical and interpersonal skills outlined below. This posting is for a mid-level position (2-5+ years of experience).

USL's NYC office is not fully reopened due to COVID-19. Positions will require site visits but will otherwise be work-from-home initially.

This position reports to a Senior Engineer / Consultant.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Perform project work including:
  • Commissioning projects for new construction and existing building retrofits.
  • Benchmarking, energy auditing, and retro-commissioning for existing buildings.
    • Complete technical project work such as:
  • Review construction documents, provide recommendations for improving constructability, indoor air quality, energy efficiency, and operations.
  • Review submittals, code requirements, and develop testing plans.
  • Inspect installations of building equipment.
  • Review and perform functional testing of central plants and terminal units.
  • Perform trend analysis.
  • Lead development of energy savings strategies and calculations.
  • Review energy savings calculations for correctness and compliance with incentive and financing program rules.
  • Provide technical and non-technical reports and issue logs for program compliance and review.
    • Perform project work related to the NYC Accelerator Program:
  • Collaborate across teams to share best practices and latest reports on high-performance construction, energy efficiency technologies, and training strategies.
  • Assist with analyzing large datasets for building databases.
  • Develop written technical resources to communicate building science technologies to stakeholders.
    • Coordinate with internal stakeholders such as project managers, energy modelers, sustainability, and accessibility consultants.
    • Manage small projects, including project financials.
    • Lead communication with building owners, developers, architects, engineers, and contractors.
    • Train entry-level staff when applicable.
    • Assist with project proposals under guidance from Senior Engineers.

    Note: The job title for this position is Building Systems Engineer.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Minimum requirements include:

    • Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
    • 2–5+ years of relevant experience, especially with HVAC systems in large multifamily or commercial buildings.
    • Field inspection experience for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
    • Experience managing datasets and small to mid-size projects.
    • Understanding of HVAC systems and high-performance alternatives.
    • Advanced Excel skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).

    Additional familiarity with:

    • LEED certification systems.
    • Utility billing and energy savings calculations.
    • Energy codes and ASHRAE standards.
    • NYC Local Laws (84, 87, 95, 97).
    • Programming skills (Python, R) for large datasets.
