JOB SUMMARY
The GASTROINTESTINAL (GI), GASTROENTEROLGY (GE) LABORATORY NURSE works in collaboration with doctors to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the gastrointestinal tract. GI/GE nurses might work as scrub or circulators in the GI lab (colonoscopy, endoscopy). The GI/GE nurse may work in a variety of settings such as hospitals, physician practices and outpatient clinics. The GI/GE Lab nurse works under the supervision of physicians and nursing supervisors/managers.

EDUCATION
Graduate of an accredited school of registered nursing.
LICENSURE
Current unrestricted nursing license in the state of practice.
EXPERIENCE
At least two years of experience in a GI/GE lab; scrub/circulator experience may be required for some positions.
Skills Required: Pre-Procedure(12 Lead EKG, Starting IVs), Post-Procedure (Airway management, recover conscious sedation, recover monoitored anesthesia care sedation), Interpretation/Management of Dysrhythmias
Skills Preferred: Equipment (Balloon Dilators, Bronchoscopy Cart/Supplies, Disposable grounding pads, Forceps, Polyp snares), Medication Admin (Opiod Analgesics, Versed), Procedures (Bronchoscopy, Circulate, Colonoscopy, EBUS, EGD), Admin Conscious Sedation, Monitoring Conscious Sedation, Specimen Handling/labeling
CREDENTIALS:
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation: BLS and ACLS; PALS required of nurses serving the pediatric population; health and screening tests as required by specific facilities and/or regulatory agencies.
ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Various client facility settings; possible exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and other potentially infectious materials.
