SALARY (non-negotiable) Commensurate with certification and experience based on the Wicomico County Salary Schedule for Teachers. Includes benefits package. HOURS Ten-month position, 190 contract days Contract Unit: This position is part of the Unit I bargaining unit for teachers. FLSA: Exempt QUALIFICATIONS Eligibility for the Maryland State Department of Education certificate in School Counseling. Master's degree from an accredited college or university in school counseling. Thorough knowledge of WCPS policies and procedures, Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Program, and Program of Studies. Knowledge of the growth and developmental stages of children. Leadership and personal qualities necessary to work effectively with students, teachers and administrators. Excellent communication skills with the ability to speak effectively to both large and small groups. Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office and the ability to quickly learn internet-based guidance programs. RESPONSIBILITIES Provide comprehensive developmental counseling services to students in the area of academic achievement, career and educational decision-making and personal/social development. Act as a consultant in this regard to staff, parents and community. Develop and implement an objective-based counseling program for all assigned students that will include career development activities, academic concerns and social/emotional adjustments. Teach classroom based counseling lessons focusing on social, emotional, and character development. Lead School behavioral/character based positive behavior programming. Extensive experience delivering intensive behavioral management strategies to elementary students. Counsel students identified by staff and/or self-referred regarding academic, personal or social concerns. Organize and implement small group or individual counseling sessions with students encountering adjustment problems, attendance, academic failure and emotional difficulties. Consult with parent, staff and other agencies concerning individual student needs and provide necessary follow-up. Arrange for orientation of students entering the school and create appropriate transition plans for students returning to home schools. Travel to elementary schools to provide behavioral management support and assess students for eligibility for program. Maintain complete student permanent record cards. Interpret results of assessments for students and parents. Consult with staff and recommend behavior modification techniques when requested for individual students. Participate in school management teams and share responsibility for the total school program as a part of individual planning and systems support. Attend to duties as specified in Article 4 of the Negotiated Agreement between the Wicomico County Board of Education and the Wicomico County Education Association. Perform related duties as assigned.
