Employment Type: Part Time, 17 hours per week, not benefits eligible Start Date: August 2025 Job Summary: Paideia is a K-12 college preparatory school of 996 students in the Emory University area of Atlanta; the half-day and elementary school enroll 382 students. The Elementary program includes twelve full-day, self-contained classrooms. There are two teachers in each class of twenty-six to twenty-eight children. Teachers work together as a lead teacher and an assistant or as two co-lead teachers. Children remain with their own teacher throughout the day except for classes with specialists, including art, music, physical education, and library. The Elementary Library program is a community-wide resource used by parents, teachers, and students. Our library program nurtures lifelong learning and emphasizes the importance of reading, both for pleasure and for information. With regularly scheduled classes that focus on literature, reading comprehension, research, and critical thinking, the library serves as a hub of culture and learning that is vital to student achievement. Pleasure reading is a core component of the library program. It builds general knowledge and vocabulary, but more profoundly, it offers the extraordinary opportunity to inhabit the interior lives of others, enlarging our understanding of the human experience and nurturing the growth of compassion and an ethical self. The library's primary focus is developing a culture of reading and encouraging reading for pleasure. This is supported by administrators and teachers. Duties and Responsibilities: The position of the library assistant is to help the lead elementary librarian with daily activities. These responsibilities can include:
  • Processing and cataloging new books and maintaining and updating catalog records for existing titles
  • Repairing damaged books and compiling lists of books to be replaced
  • Run overdue notices and manage overdue communications with students and parents
  • Assisting with training parent volunteers
  • Handling book reserves - emailing students when reserves are ready, and managing the hold placements
  • Help elementary-aged students with drop-in research requests for books
  • Assist in organizing the library donation sale, author visits, and other events
  • Assist in creating displays and bulletin boards
  • Helping students find books that match their interests
Required Skills and Abilities: Important personal qualities include a love of working with children a desire to learn from the Elementary Librarian, and an ability to create a positive, nurturing environment for students and parents in the library Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must have a minimum of 2 years of experience working with elementary-aged children.
