Qualifications
  • Shall be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have an active CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Have completed 9 clock hours of approved preservice training in communicating with staff, parents, and the public, or have completed at least one academic college course for credit
  • Minimum one-year related experience.
  • Evidence of continuing education and professional growth.
  • Desire to further the understanding and practice of Montessori philosophy.
  • Work under the direct supervision of the staff person in charge of the group of children to whom the instructional assistant is assigned.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Evidence of continuing education and professional growth includes meeting all necessary requirements established by state law and regulatory agencies.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • Within the first 30 days of employment, the employee must be able to meet all necessary requirements as established by state law and regulatory agencies, including but not limited to basic health and safety training.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Curriculum, Materials, and Classroom Management

  • Serves the needs of the children by overseeing/directing hands-on classroom activities.
  • Responsible for assisting in the preparation of the environment in which the furnishings and materials are complete, including care and maintenance of classroom supplies and equipment and maintaining inventory of classroom materials:
    • Prepare curriculum materials, as directed by the Lead
    • Take students to office to make copies/gather materials as needed
    • Repair (or help children to repair) materials as necessary.
    • Organize storage/assist in inventory and make note of materials that need to be replenished or replaced.
    • Maintain a neat and tidy personal area rid of visual clutter
  • Participates in record keeping assessment of children as requested by the Lead, such as attendance, checking student work, and documenting photos in Transparent Classroom.

Student Support and Supervision

  • Models positive classroom leadership in support of the classroom and school community.
  • Monitors the various activities of the class, including during recess and lunch.
  • Use appropriate positive Montessori discipline techniques with students in a friendly and supportive manner and calm tone of voice.
  • Protecting the safety and well-being of children.
  • Works with individual and small groups of children when not providing overview of classroom.
  • Supervises transitions and other periods when children are in the hallway, such as lunch and end of day
    • Any saved work must have a nametag and be moved to a rug or a chowki so tables are clean and clear for indoor lunch
    • Ensure tables are wiped, chairs are on tables, and pillows are on chairs at end of day
    • Make sure walkie talkie is on the charging cradle and lamps are turned off
  • Assists children with daily work including, but not limited to:
    • Oversee weekly spelling tests for students and maintain record of progress
    • Supervise cursive study for new students and check cursive booklets at the end of the day
    • Oversee independent research projects for students who need additional one on one guidance
    • Provide support for weekly writing in the form of witnessing verbalization of keywords and/or editing rough drafts

Professional Responsibility

  • Establish a harmonious relationship with Elementary Lead and all supporting staff.
  • Assisting in the development of and participates in classroom events, school functions, and school-wide activities.
  • Notify Elementary Lead on concerning matters with students or parents.
  • Maintains professionalism and confidentiality in dealing with co-workers, students, and parents.
  • Helps with carpool as needed.
  • Required attendance and participation in all staff meetings.

Other duties, as assigned

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to stand, bend, lift and work in an outdoor playground environment for extended periods of time while supervising children.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
