Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of a Caltrans Maintenance Manager II, is in charge of and directs the work of Electrical Crews, and Structural Steel Paint Crew. The Electrical Area Superintendent is responsible for all of the highway electrical systems, within the District including, but not limited to, traffic signals, roadway and sign lighting, pumping facilities, weigh stations, and all devices associated with the Traffic Operations Systems, such as CCTV Cameras, CMS's, HAR Systems Detector Stations etc., along with the multiple District operations of the Structural Steel Paint Crew.

Eligibility for hire is determined by your score on the Caltrans Electrical Area Superintendent Exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions

This is a Limited Term position which may be extended to 24 months or become permanent.

While at their base of operation or at meetings with other entities, employees will work inside of climate-controlled buildings, but some operations will take place alongside, over or upon state highways and right of way. The Electrical Area Superintendent will be exposed to noise, inclement weather, dirt, odors, uneven surfaces, high-speed traffic conditions and moving construction equipment. Must be willing to work odd hours, nights, and weekends if called upon.

  • This position requires visual and color acuity adequate to successfully perform the essential functions of the job, willingness to work at odd hours, be available for day or night calls, stay abreast of current technological changes in the fields of electricity and electronics, work up to 550 feet above pavement or water, work in the midst of traffic, and have the ability to withstand working under adverse (e.g., cold, wet, windy) weather conditions.
