Economic Development Director

The New York City Mayor's Office is responsible for overseeing city services throughout the five boroughs, coordinating public agencies and departments, and managing public property. New York City Mayor Eric Adams is head of the executive branch of New York City's government. The Adams' administration is leading the fight to serve the people of the greatest city in the world, ensuring delivery of efficient and effective services, working to make New York City's economy stronger, reducing inequality, improving public safety, and making the city more affordable that meets the needs of all New Yorkers. The Mayor's Office for International Affairs serves as the liaison between the City and New York City's international community, which includes 193 Permanent Missions, 116 Consulates, and the headquarters of the United Nations. The Office functions as a global platform from which the City can promote its goals for a more just and equitable society, showcase the diversity of New Yorkers and share best practices with the world. The Office also works to foster positive relations and to encourage collaboration between the international community and New York City's agencies and local neighborhoods.

The Economic Development Director (EDD) will support the office in fostering connections between overseas businesses, trade commissions, and the City's economic development agencies. In doing so, the EDD will work to highlight New York City's innovative programs for building a strong economy, including initiatives supporting small businesses and women and minority-led businesses. The EDD will also work closely with various international trade organizations, chambers of commerce, trade missions, international business leaders, and trade representatives to identify and leverage opportunities for trade, investment, and other innovative advancements. Additionally, the EDD will assist in organizing and participating in international trade missions, conferences, and events to enhance NYC's global economic presence and attract foreign investments. Finally, the EDD will also play a critical role in delivering on the Office's core operational and protocol obligations, including facilitating the visits of delegations from governments (municipal, state, federal) around the world while working to foster a closer relationship between the broader diplomatic community and the City.

Working closely with the Commissioner, Deputy Commissioners, and the International Affairs Team, the EDD will:

  • Collaborate with the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioners to develop and implement an annual strategic plan focused on economic development initiatives.
  • Highlight the work of the NYC Mayor's Office for International Affairs in promoting economic growth, equity, and inclusion by identifying and cultivating strategic opportunities.
  • In coordination with the Team, develop and execute plans for international trade missions, conferences, and events to enhance NYC's global economic presence.
  • Research international trade conferences and network with business leaders, chambers of commerce, and international trade organizations.
  • Organize events including business roundtables and other economic development events.
  • Create customized economic development presentations for visiting delegations to showcase NYC's economic initiatives/opportunities and write talking points for various events.
  • Provide comprehensive support, including administrative assistance, for visiting delegations of government officials and international business leaders.
  • Oversee day-to-day administration and record-keeping related to the portfolio, including data entry, management of a strategic relationship database, and maintaining relevant contacts.
  • Work on special projects as assigned.

About You:

  • You have a Bachelors Degree.
  • You have a minimum of five years of relevant work experience.
  • You have experience in economic development, program development, implementation, and evaluation, particularly with international projects and partners.
  • You have a robust relationship management experience involving diverse groups and individuals, especially in the private sector.
  • You have strong knowledge of key stakeholders and constituencies in New York City government and New York's international community.
  • You have strong facilitation and communication skills (written and oral).
  • You must have the ability to (a) work independently, (b) actively seek collaborations, (c) support colleagues in their work, and (d) work in a multicultural, multilingual environment.
  • You must have excellent planning, project management, and organizational skills.
  • You must be results and solution-oriented.
  • You must have a demonstrated ability to acquire and understand new information/data rapidly.
