Position Summary This position is accountable for ensuring the safe, efficient operation of engines, motors, and equipment aboard their assigned dredge. The incumbent will also ensure that needed equipment or engine repairs are provided in a timely fashion to prevent downtime. This position will work closely with the Dredge Captain, Deck Captain and Dredge Superintendents in the performance of his/her duties.

The incumbent will also ensure that needed equipment or engine repairs are provided in a timely fashion to prevent downtime. This position will work closely with the Dredge Captain, Deck Captain and Dredge Superintendents in the performance of his/her duties. Specific Responsibilities
- Works with the Dredge Captain and Deck Captain to ensure the safe and efficient operation of engines, motors, and equipment of the dredge.
- Supervises and coordinates the activities of the crew engaged in operating and maintaining engines, equipment, and spaces aboard the dredge.
- Inspects engines and equipment, making repairs and directing others to make repairs.
- Orders supplies and maintains an appropriate parts inventory.
- Stands engine room watches and maintains engine room watch schedules.
- Checks fuel being used, and orders additional fuel as needed.
- Uses hand and power tools to repair machinery.
- Maintains engine room logbooks.
- Ensures that engines are greased, oiled, and repaired as necessary.
- Monitors gages for proper operations and makes appropriate dissections.
- Instructs and trains the crew in safe and proper job procedures.
- Corrects safety deficiencies or other unsafe conditions aboard the dredge.
- Maintains fuel barge and checks for need of repair.
- Supervises the work activities of the 2nd Engineer aboard the vessel.
- Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.

Position Requirements A minimum of 2 years dredging experience is required with prior experience as a 2nd Engineer desirable. Prior knowledge and ability should include the operation of marine engines, equipment, gauges, instruments, etc. The incumbent must be able to work 2 weeks on and 1 week off and work 12-hour days. In addition, the incumbent must be capable of obtaining a Tankerman license within one year. The incumbent must have the ability to quickly learn the technical aspects of the dredging operation; be an effective supervisor; and have the ability to interface well with other employees on the dredge. The Company expects and requires incumbent and each of its other employees to observe and fulfill the above and all other safety responsibilities and actively work toward maintaining a safe workplace. Failure to do so can result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment. Physical/Mental Requirements The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation. The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, personal flotation device, or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done. Must be qualified and physically able to drive regular passenger vehicles to visit work locations and job sites. The incumbent must possess the ability to remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstance of the incident and as directed by the Safety Representative or other management personnel. Must be capable of evacuating the work area in a timely manner should an emergency situation arise. In addition, the Chief Engineer must also be capable of:
- Standing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, climbing, or sitting for long periods of time.
- Repetitive movements by feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands and back in performance of work.
- Climbing vertical ladders to heights of 40-50.
- Working in confined spaces.
- Working at elevated heights.
- Lifting objects alone up to 50 lbs. as required.
- Adapting to extreme temperature changes.
- Adapting to outdoor conditions and prolonged exposure.
- Deciphering visual and audible changes in dredging activity.
- Remaining calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstance of the incident.
