With their expertise, they design, generate, and measure radiation dose distributions and calculations. They provide oversight to high-level treatment procedures in both external beam radiation therapy and brachytherapy. They communicate the patient's treatment plan to radiation therapists by providing field arrangements and beam modification devices. They address any concerns that may arise during the treatment planning phase. A medical dosimetrist contributes to quality assurance and safety by providing technical and physics support. This support includes radiation protection and qualitative machine calibrations. They are vital members of the radiation oncology team who perform calculations for accurate delivery of prescribed doses. They document pertinent information in patient records and verify the accuracy of all calculations. They prepare computerized plans for radiation therapy patients. Under the guidance of the chief physicist, they assure compliance with radiation safety and protection regulations. They participate in interdisciplinary health team conferences to assess patient and family needs. They actively participate in continuous quality improvement and performance improvement activities.
