The Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL), a Directorate of the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, Stanford University, and a national research facility, seeks a Senior Scientist with research interest and strong experience in synchrotron radiation (SR)-based materials science and strong background leading and managing technical research organization who will serve as the Division Director of the Materials Science Division within SSRL.The scientist will develop and lead a vigorous materials research program that will drive the development of new capabilities at SSRL, including experimental approaches, instrumentation, and integrating research using x-ray probes with advanced data workflows, AI/ML methods and computing for accelerating scientific discovery. SSRL's Materials Science program, on the 3rd generation storage ring SPEAR3, utilizes several hard and tender x-ray undulator, wiggler and bending magnet stations for experiments using primarily x-ray diffraction, small-angle/wide-angle x-ray scattering, x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, x-ray microscopy, and x-ray spectroscopy.Development directions include in-situ and operando experiments, integration of synchrotron x-ray methods with materials synthesis and device fabrication, multi-modal characterization including non-SR techniques, and time-resolved studies, with potential expansion to experiments at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS).For this position, the science focus is on materials; other components of the SSRL program include chemistry, catalysis, environmental science and biology. This scientist will also play a leading role in planning for a future SSRL upgrade.Specific Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To:
- Provide strategic leadership and management for the SSRL Materials Science Division and program(s) exercising delegated authority for policy and programmatic decisions;
- Achieve goals through scientific, technical and managerial staff engaged in developing, advancing and applying science, engineering and technology;
- Play a critical role in SSRL operations policy decisions;
- Formulate and articulate the near-term and long-term goals of the Materials Science Division;
- Lead high-profile research programs in the area of growth, processing and characterization of materials, with particular focus on energy, electronic, quantum and catalytic systems. This would include in situ and operando characterization of functional materials, as well as fundamental studies to understand their electronic and physical structure and their correlation to function;
- Develop the scientific case and work with SSRL management to seek funding for dedicated facilities, including beam lines and laboratory facilities for materials research;
- Create external and internal scientific collaborations with researchers, including academia, national laboratories and industry;
- Create an interface between SSRL and industrial researchers to enable growth of this user community for the facility;
- Drive the creation of research infrastructure at SSRL that enables these scientific directions to evolve. Examples of great interest include materials growth and processing integrated with pre-, in-situ-, and post-characterization techniques utilizing SSRL's x-ray capabilities, and the development and exploitation of state-of-the-art AI/ML models for on-the-fly data analysis and enhanced beam line operation;
- Manage the division's annual budget (approximately 17M) personnel, and facilities resources. Mentor, train and supervise scientists (e.g. postdoctoral, staff scientists) in broadly defined x-ray based materials science research and technique/instrumentation development. Team-teach workshops and summer schools with SSRL/SLAC/Stanford/invited scientists.
Note: Appointment at the Senior Scientist level is a regular-continuing position and requires an achieved recognition of leadership nationally and/or internationally, as a result of original developments in one's field of expertise.
