Job SummaryJob Title District 504 Counselor Job Code GS-105 Job Grade Teacher's Schedule Job Goal To ensure consistent implementation and compliance with Section 504 regulations across Huntsville City Schools by providing support to school counselors and administrators in the development, review, and monitoring of 504 plans, promoting equitable access to education for students with disabilities and ensuring adherence to federal guidelines. Reports To School Counseling Services Coordinator Supervises None Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists school counselors and administrators in developing and reviewing Section 504 plans to ensure individualized support and compliance with legal requirements.
  • Serves as a key resource and consultative support for schools navigating complex or unique 504 cases.
  • Evaluates and reviews documentation to ensure compliance with Section 504 regulations and Huntsville City Schools' policies and procedures.
  • Delivers ongoing training, professional development, and technical assistance to school staff regarding 504 eligibility, accommodations, and documentation protocols.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of federal and state laws related to Section 504 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Collaborates with Student Services, Special Education, and Mental Health teams to provide a coordinated, multi-disciplinary approach to student support.
  • Oversees accurate and timely collection and reporting of 504 data to ensure compliance with district and audit requirements.
  • Develops and updates resources, forms, and guidance tools to support effective and consistent 504 plan implementation.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned by district leadership.
Qualifications Must hold a Master's degree in School Counseling from a regionally accredited college or university and possess a current Alabama professional certificate as a school counselor. A minimum of three years of successful experience as a school counselor is preferred. The candidate must demonstrate strong knowledge of Section 504 regulations, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) frameworks. Additionally, the candidate should have a proven ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with school teams and other stakeholders, along with strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills. The ability to work independently while adhering to district policies and procedures is essential. Physical Requirements Requires light work exerting up to ten (10) pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently. Job involves sitting most of the time. Terms of Employment Ten month year. Salary as recommended by the Superintendent and approved by the Board.
