DescriptionESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Receives and transmits all incoming emergency and non-emergency telephone calls and provides information to law enforcement personnel using direct radio communication by accessing computerized information regarding criminal histories, existing warrants, vehicle registrations, driver's license status, and similar information.
- Dispatches appropriate response, including: fire, police, ambulance, etc.
- Relays descriptions and other information to police field units concerning, but not limited to, wanted persons, complaints, disturbances, accidents, and other emergency events.
- Maintains appropriate control logs and recordings. Copy reports.
- Contacts businesses and homeowners as required.
- Coordinates towing service.
- Updates and maintains emergency contacts for businesses, including monitoring alarms.
- Maintains facility security by using electronic devices associated with communications, including monitoring video screens, the lobby, city hall interior door, city hall exterior doors, community center, parking lot, and garage.
- Maintains good housekeeping of the dispatching area, including supplies and materials.
- Due to the required staffing 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, this position must be able to work on short notice and rotating shifts, including holidays and weekends.

- Ability to sit for long periods of time and remain alert.
- Ability to learn City geography and the surrounding areas.
- Ability to learn radio codes used in public safety.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written orders.
- Ability to remain calm, maintain poise, exercise good judgment, and respond quickly during emergencies and other high-pressure periods.
- Excellent customer service skills, including the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to perform multi-functional tasks; write, speak, and type simultaneously.
- Ability to use computer software and enter data accurately from a wide variety of source documents.
- Ability to work or be available days/nights/weekends/holidays.
- Ability to plan, organize, and use mature judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions in accordance with established policy.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.
Education and Experience:
- Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
- Experience in customer service, emergency service operations, or related field.
- Basic clerical skills such as typing, filing, and the use of standard office equipment.
(A comparable amount of training, education and/or experience may be substituted for the above qualifications.) Licenses and Certifications:
- Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Tennessee driver's license by date of hire.
- Must successfully complete NCIC training and Query Certification within 2 weeks of hire.
- Must successfully complete NCIC training and Basic Certification within 3 months of hire.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Occasional=1-3 Hrs; Frequent=3-5 Hrs; Constant=5-8 Hrs - Per Work Day) Vision - correctable to 20/20. Hearing - correctable to 15/15. Constant sitting, use of hands, arms, grasping, typing, and communication involving speaking and hearing. Occasional standing, walking.
