The Need

For over 25 years, IJM has pioneered efforts to protect vulnerable people from violence. Our Justice System Strengthening Projects have significantly reduced slavery and violence for large populations in poverty. As we expand our impact to protect 500 million people, we seek a Director, US Accounting and Operations.

The Director provides oversight, strategy, and direction for US operations, supports US policy implementation in line with federal regulations, and contributes to global financial operations, accounting, and reporting. The ideal candidate is an experienced accountant and manager with US operations experience, international sensitivities, and the capacity to evaluate strategies effectively while partnering with global finance teams.

This position is hybrid (onsite Tuesdays & Thursdays) if located in the Washington, DC area, or remote for non-local candidates. It reports to the Assistant Controller, Global Finance and Accounting, and requires the right to work in the US.

Responsibilities

  • Leadership and Management: Direct a team of accountants and payroll staff, fostering collaboration, professional development, and achievement of objectives.

  • Lead month-end and year-end close and reporting for US Accounting and Operations, ensuring all monthly balance sheet reconciliations are completed.

  • Oversee US statutory and tax filings, including 403b retirement plan audits, 1099 reporting, W2, workers' comp benefits, US tax-exempt statuses, and state tax registrations.

  • Support and collaborate on the 990 tax filings and annual external audits.

  • Develop staff capabilities to promote personal growth and effective performance aligned with IJM's mission.

  • Manage the Workday financial operation process for US operations.

Strategy & Knowledge Development & Implementation:

  • Manage onboarding of expatriate staff and third-country nationals regarding compensation, including tax planning and filings.

Networking & Partnership:

  • Maintain close relationships with senior leaders and collaborate across divisions, especially with HR, to support US regulations.

Policies and Procedures:

  • Develop and update accounting and finance policies to ensure internal controls, compliance, and risk mitigation.

  • Assist with external financial audits and coordinate with the Global Revenue team on transactions.

Communication:

  • Coordinate with US and Global Finance teams on policies and reporting deadlines.

Training and Development:

  • Identify training needs, provide resources, and coach staff for professional and spiritual growth.

Documentation, Reporting & Data Management:

  • Oversee documentation of transactions, tax documents, and banking activities.

General Accounting & Statutory Compliance:

  • Manage payroll and tax expense reporting, ensuring accuracy and compliance with GAAP for consolidated reporting and audits.

General tasks:

  • Recruit qualified staff aligned with IJM's goals and values.

  • Collaborate with leadership to support organizational goals and strategic initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Licensed CPA or an advanced degree in accounting preferred.

  • 8-10 years' experience in accounting or audit management, with 5+ years in international development and 3+ years supervising teams.

Technical Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP, IFRS, and IRS regulations for 501(c)(3).

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and electronic financial systems.

Non-Technical Competencies

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and team leadership experience.

  • Clear communication skills for diverse audiences.

  • Ability to objectively assess policies and adapt accordingly.
