Job Description

The Operations Science & Technology department supports technical and scientific activities related to the manufacture of pharmaceutical products in AbbVie facilities or in contract facilities. The director establishes goals consistent with development, manufacturing, and customer requirements, implements plans/policies, assigns duties and responsibilities, and monitors performance to meet division goals and commitments. The director manages a diverse staff of scientists and technicians through section managers, ensuring seamless coordination between development and manufacturing, including third-party contract manufacturers. The role is accountable for all departmental activities and provides scientific, technical, and business leadership.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide credible CMC leadership for Eye Care (OTC and Rx) at AbbVie.
  • Lead and maintain a highly diversified, cross-functional team to ensure timely, budget-conscious completion of all aspects of CMC lifecycle management, adhering to the highest scientific, regulatory, quality, marketing, and commercial standards.
  • Evaluate and implement new technologies in development and manufacturing, integrating current regulations, guidance, and competitive insights into strategic decisions.
  • Assess new business opportunities rapidly and accurately.
  • Balance company needs with resource availability.
  • Develop and communicate cost estimates, business plans, timelines, and contingency plans.
  • Recruit and allocate resources effectively within an open communication environment, emphasizing scientific and compliance excellence.
  • Manage project budgets, participate in capital planning, and oversee capital project execution.
  • Make go/no-go decisions on projects.
  • Represent AbbVie to regulatory agencies, providing information and participating in meetings as appropriate.
  • Foster good relationships with Technical Operations and other functional areas, providing effective technical and business leadership at the R&D/Operations interface.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in a related scientific field.
  • 10+ years of experience in pharmaceutical or eye care development/manufacturing, formulation, analytical chemistry, or technical services, including at least 6+ years in managerial roles within the industry.
  • Strong expertise in drug development, product support, technical issues, and related regulatory and compliance fields.
