Department PurposeThe Division of Arts and Sciences provides instruction in the disciplines of Arts, Biology, Communication, Humanities, Education, Science, Engineering, Mathematics, and Social & Behavioral Sciences.Position SummaryThe Director of the Science Lab provides leadership and administration to the department by supporting science faculty and staff in preparing and offering laboratory experiences to students by ordering, preparing, and maintaining lab supplies and equipment, disposing of waste, overseeing departmental safety and training, ordering lab kits, teaching science courses, supervising work-study students, and serving as the Chemical Hygiene Officer for science programs and laboratories.In accordance with Colorado Revised Statutes 24-50-135, this position has been exempted from the State Personnel System.Salary is between $65,000-104,000 depending on education, experience, and certifications.Essential Job Functions* Prepares materials for all scheduled Pueblo campus lab activities by keeping updated inventories, conferring with instructors, monitoring the course schedule, and referring to lab manuals.* Prepares schedules for the laboratory use from other programs/departments.* Coordinates departmental and individual meetings with department faculty and instructional staff on a regular basis.* Consults regularly with appropriate branch campus staff at all locations on their lab materials preparations, safety protocols, and course development.* Consults with faculty in developing lab experiences and provides expertise to students in the learning lab environment.* Uses professional knowledge to troubleshoot or respond to student needs.* Serves as the Chemical Hygiene Officer for all PCC science laboratories.* Provides annual Safety Trainings to appropriate personnel at Pueblo and Branch locations.* Responds swiftly to all lab safety, training, equipment, and chemical storage/use issues and elevates urgent concerns to the Department Chair, Division Dean, and Public Safety as needed.* Stores all chemicals appropriately, labels all containers per best practices, and maintains required Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).* Maintains and posts current and complete inventory lists of all lab chemicals at each lab doorway for immediate inspection by emergency responders.* Conducts safety inspections and audits of all labs before the start of all semesters.* Proactively coordinates meetings with Public Safety to review, implement, and revise the Chemical Hygiene Plan.* Tracks inventory, future course schedules, new course development, and enrollment forecasts to anticipate needs and order lab supplies and equipment for Pueblo campus labs according to PCC purchasing procedures.* Teaches up to 5 credits of Biology or Chemistry lectures/labs per semester.* Maintains and repairs instruments, particularly microscopes, by personally repairing the instrument, contracting with specialists, or following up on warranties.* Coordinates inspections and maintenance on larger equipment.Additional Functions* Works independently with little supervision or as part of a team.* Communicates effectively with students, colleagues, and others.* Interacts professionally and respectfully with students, colleagues, and others.* Assesses individual and department work processes and recommends improvements.* Complies with State Fiscal Rules, State Board policies, System and College protocols, and departmental procedures.* Obtains and maintains proficiency with required systems and equipment.* Maintains confidentiality of student and employee information as required.* Completes all required compliance training within the established timeline.* Serves on committees and other groups as assigned.Education* Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution in Biology, Chemistry, or a related discipline.Experience* At least 3 years of professional experience in a lab setting* At least 2 years of experience in higher education and/or instruction* At least 1 year of supervisory experienceLicense/Certification* Certified Chemical Hygiene Officer or ability to obtain within 1 year of hireKnowledge, Skills, Abilities* Knowledge of laws, accreditation standards, and best practices pertaining to chemical safety and disposal procedures, lab safety standards, and applicable Federal and State regulations.* Proficiency with Microsoft Office; working knowledge of Ellucian Banner* Able to lift 15 pounds.* Able to read and communicate in English.* Mobility around campus.Schedule* Weekdays (State business hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm)* Infrequent weekend and/or evening hours required
