Position SummaryThe Director of Transportation is responsible for overseeing all company delivery operations, ensuring efficient, timely, and cost-effective service. This includes managing fleet operations, logistics planning and coordination, and last mile delivery execution. The role requires strong leadership of transportation staff and implementation of controls to support operational excellence. The Director will work in close collaboration with the warehousing team for storage and loading activities, as well as maintain strong alignment with customer service and sales teams to ensure a seamless delivery experience for customers.
Director of TransportationPosition SummaryThe Director of Transportation is responsible for overseeing all company delivery operations, ensuring efficient, timely, and cost-effective service. This includes managing fleet operations, logistics planning and coordination, and last mile delivery execution. The role requires strong leadership of transportation staff and implementation of controls to support operational excellence. The Director will work in close collaboration with the warehousing team for storage and loading activities, as well as maintain strong alignment with customer service and sales teams to ensure a seamless delivery experience for customers.Key Responsibilities
- Fleet Operations
- Direct the operation, maintenance, and performance of the company's vehicle fleet, including company-owned and leased assets.
- Advance the company's backhauling operations to ensure timely, cost-effective, and high-quality delivery of goods while maintaining compliance, safety standards, and operational efficiency.
- Ensure fleet compliance with DOT regulations, environmental standards, and internal safety policies.
- Evaluate and implement fleet management systems and telematics for performance tracking and route optimization.
- Implement preventative maintenance schedules and cost-saving measures related to fuel, maintenance, and vehicle utilization.
- Logistics Planning & Coordination
- Lead the strategic planning and daily execution of transportation and distribution operations across all service areas.
- Develop and manage routing, dispatching, and scheduling strategies to optimize delivery performance and minimize cost.
- Manage relationships/service levels, with key transportation vendors including Final Mile, TL, LTL, Parcel.
- Home Delivery
- Oversee Washington and Oregon delivery organization.
- Build and manage delivery partner relationships (internal or third-party), ensuring SLAs and service quality are maintained.
- Resolve escalated customer service issues related to delivery and identify root causes for long-term fixes.
- Innovate last-mile delivery strategies using technology and consumer feedback to improve the customer experience.
- Leadership and Compliance
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing transportation team, including managers, dispatchers, and drivers.
- Establish departmental goals, track performance metrics, and report outcomes to executive leadership.
- Maintain compliance with all federal, state, and local transportation laws and regulations.
- Forecast transportation costs and lead process improvement initiatives
- Identify opportunities for improvements.
- Collaborate with other departments for continuous improvement of company processes.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, or related field (Master's preferred).
- 7+ years of progressive transportation/logistics leadership experience, including fleet and last-mile operations.
- Certified Transportation Professional (CTP) a plus
- Strong knowledge of DOT regulations, FMCSA standards, and transportation compliance requirements.
- Experience with transportation management systems (TMS), route optimization tools, and fleet telematics.
- Exceptional leadership, strategic thinking, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
